News and notes from around the interweb:

• $2.9 million worth of televisions, lighting fixtures and paintings was stolen from the Hyatt Regency Trinidad, Port of Spain

• Thursday’s United flight UA1035 from Houston to Quito, Ecuador returned to Houston because crew heard sounds from the cargo bay that made them think someone was trapped inside. They stopped their climb at 24,000 feet, returning to Houston. No one was inside. A new plane took passengers to their destination arriving about four hours late.

• United focusing on domestic business, targeted fares in 2017. Not a ton new here, but a good overview of much of what United has been saying. They do drop a stat that United takes 6% longer to turn an aircraft than competitors do.

  They suggest United’s new basic economy fares which ban full size carry ons will help, with fewer bags in overhead bins and less gate checking of bags. However, competitors that turn planes faster aren’t (yet?) doing this — so it’s not the cause of United’s problem. Which means they still should get better, and Basic Economy fares sort of miss the point.
