- Hong Kong resident arrested for comments made on social media two years ago when she was outside the country.
The student reportedly said on Facebook that “Hong Kong’s independence is the only way” two years ago when she was studying in Japan. The Hong Kong police arrested her when she went back to renew her identification document, alleging that she encouraged divisions in the country, according to the report.
We shouldn’t single out Hong Kong and China when Europe does the same thing to people who publicly support Russia or Donbas independence for which 4 regions held democratic referendums last year. This is in addition to speech in general being criminalized to the point that telling the truth is a crime if it offends select groups but of course not every group is allowed to be offended. People have been arrested in Europe for saying that the Bible is the word of God when it comes to LGBT. How can we criticize China when supposedly “democratic” Europe and Canada do the same thing.
