British Airways Is Forcing Its Employee Football Club To Drop The Name — Ending An 80-Year Link

British Airways F.C. is an English football (soccer) club that started as a workplace team for airline staff. It dates to 1947 when it was the team of British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) employees. After BOAC and British European Airways were merged into British Airways, their works teams merged in 1982 to form British Airways Football Club. At the time of the 1982 merger, it reportedly had 200+ members and 15 adult teams.

It currently plays in the Combined Counties League Premier Division North. But British Airways is making them drop the name.

I’m not sure how doing this benefits the British Airways brand. Although they’re squeezing members of the former Executive Club and kicking customers out of tiers, so perhaps doing this is their brand.

Regardless, it’s sad when a team has the rug pulled out from under them after 44 years with the name – and especially so since they’ve been active for about 80 years.

  1. Maybe Lufthansa would like to sponsor them. Couldn’t hurt to ask. I certainly would ask any and all competitors…

  2. Makes about as much sense as: “One on’t cross beams gone owt askew on’t treddle…”
