Deep Dive Into Hyatt’s Free Night Award Category Changes, Not As Bad As 3-1 Negative Would Look!

While we’re seeing 3-to-1 category increases (seems bad!) it’s interesting that these are very different from similar clusters of increases in the past.

Previously we’ve seen a lot of high end hotels become more expensive as redemptions. This time we’re seeing lower category hotels go up the most. The bulk of the action with these changes are in the bottom half of the chart’s distribution. The biggest grouping of changes is category 3 hotels becoming 4’s, while we also see 1’s become 2’s and 2’s become 3’s.

Now They Say You Should Clean Your Own Hotel Room – But Still Leave A Tip For Housekeeping

Hotels have been on a mission to cut back on housekeeping costs. They don’t want to do full cleans of every room every day. They’ll make you request it (and sometimes fill out paperwork) so that there are fewer rooms to clean, and they can hire fewer housekeepers who don’t work as many hours.

And hotel owners are pushing tips for housekeepers so they don’t have to pay the housekeeper as much.

Are Hotel Room Duvets And Throw Pillows Really Changed After Each Guest?

As a general matter if you see something white it’s being changed, if it’s multicolored it was probably purchased specifically to avoid showing stains. Pricier chains have changed bedding more regularly than budget hotels. There was once a standard in the industry for mid-priced and below to change duvets four times a year coinciding with a deep clean of the room.

American Airlines Used To Own A Hotel Chain. It’s Now Part Of Marriott And IHG

Pan Am founded Intercontinental Hotels. After all there needed to be places for American consumers to stay in the far flung destinations they served, and as a tool of US foreign policy.

At one point United Airlines owned both Hilton and Westin hotels as part of their attempt at horizontal integration in travel under the Allegis brand. United wouldn’t just sell airline tickets, they’d market the full trip to consumers.

But I’d forgotten that American Airlines had a hotel chain.

Sheraton Still Awful After All These Years, Hilton And Marriott Strategic Moves Revealed In Government Filings

Both chains report that 78% of their revenue comes from the U.S. Their international footprints are smaller than you’d think!

Marriott has more than twice as much booked liability for hotel award night redemptions as Hilton. But that does not mean “Marriott’s loyalty program generated a far higher total volume of rewards for members than Hilton’s did” since Hilton pays hotels less when members redeem than Marriott does.
