The Digital Camera I Use is Now Selling for Half What I Paid for It

I got a chuckle the other evening, I pulled out my camera. You use a camera? Yeah, I have a smartphone and it’s fine but a real camera takes much better pictures. I suspect most people are happy nowadays with their smartphone, maybe taking a camera on vacation with them.

I carry mine around with me in my laptop bag. Goodness knows I’m not a great photographer, which is very much the reason why. I’m a point and shoot kinda guy and I’ve never taken a class or been shown how to take great pictures. But the photos I take with my Canon s110 are more than decent, certainly good enough for blogging.

Last year I bought the camera for ~ $325. The new normal price seems to be $299. But the camera, with case, and 8mg SD card is selling on Amazon for just $159. That’s a steal.

  • Built-in Wi-Fi allows you to wirelessly transfer your images to social networking sites through Canon image gateway; to a PC or upload virtually anywhere on your iOS or Android device
  • 5x Optical Zoom with 24mm Wide-Angle lens allows you to capture more in your frame and a bright f/2.0 lens makes it ideal for low-light conditions or using shallow depth-of-field for dramatic, soft backgrounds
  • 12.1 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor combined with a DIGIC 5 Image Processor creates the Canon HS SYSTEM for exceptional low-light performance up to ISO 12800 and enhanced image quality
  • Capture stunning 1080p Full HD video in stereo sound with a dedicated movie button; video functions include fine detail movie processing for lifelike images, zoom while shooting and convenient playback on an HDTV via the HDMI output
  • A 3.0-inch capacitive touch panel PureColor System LCD offers easy and intuitive operation and Touch Shutter makes shooting easy and interactive
  • Anyway, thought some folks might be in the market for a digital camera at what strikes me (a non-expert) as a pretty good deal.

    1. Low price but I would not buy it. If the goal is low light sensitivity the sensor is too small and the ISO can only partially compensate for that. There is a comparable size body but with a much bigger sensor in the Panasonic GM1. Of course the body is more expensive as are the lenses since this am interchangeable camera (you can swap out the lenses). You get what you pay for. If at all possible you should shoot RAW and learn a bit of Adobe Lightroom or Apeture. It will make your photos look much better — especially when shooting with low/ambient light.

    2. Hmm… I guess I lucked out. I bought a Fujifilm x10 (which has been a wonderful little camera) for $188 over the summer, and recently sold it for $257.35 (after fees.) It’s still about the same price on Amazon: http://amzn.to/MS26zQ

    3. Both Amazon links say $274 on Sunday, 02-23. Perhaps you were looking a different model. Still, a nice camera. Just a little disconnect on the price.

    4. Unbelievable, I got in on the s110 at around 340 in November.. And was thinking the same and shaking my head when I saw that deal!

    5. I guess I lucked out, my Fujifilm x10 was $188 from Best Buy and I sold it for $257 (after fees.). The same camera is now selling for about $260 used on Amazon.

    6. Thanks for pointing this deal out. For those who are still trying to get in on it, it’s no longer good on Amazon but is still going on eBay. Click through to Dan’s Deals in this post and he has the eBay link.

    7. Great camera. The reason it is reduced heavily is because it is superseded by the S120. I have had both.

    8. Thanks Gary, just ordered one. Not sure if I was lucky or what but just ordered at 10:39 central time. Link worked but couldn’t use my prime shipping and had to pay $10.95 for shipping.

    9. I own an earlier version of this camera and it rocks! This is a great deal, you will be hard pressed to find another pocketable camera that shoots in RAW+JPEG with a 1/1.7″ or larger sensor at that price. Most compacts are in the 1/2.3″ category. The low light performance is more than acceptable for a camera in this class/price range.

    10. whoops, sorry for the dupe… But yeah, looks like a decent deal, although there appear to be lots of great deals. I have really fallen in love with Fujifilm’s X series and there are good deals on the older models, the XF1 is nice at $199, and it’s like a real camera with manual zoom! Pretty sweet.

    11. Better pic quality than a smartphone, esp regarding optical zoom, but consider whether you typically save/share at that higher quality rate. The vast majority of people never upload/save/view at full rate, and depending upon what smartphone you have, you can get darn close in quality anyway. Also consider that a smartphone too will upload via wifi (or 4G if data isn’t a concern), which you can have appear instantly on DropBox, Google Drive, *and* on all your synced PCs/tabs/other devices… free. No need to ever manually transfer or back up or worry. For me, MP3 player, Garmin nav devices, digi camera/video were all obsolete post-2008.

    12. While I use my cell for daylight, posed shots a lot, it’s useless for motion shots and horrible in low light. I always carry a point and shoot in my purse for backup. Having a p/s that can upload either to your phone or to FB, etc.., is a bonus, because if you don’t share instantly, lots of photos just stay on the device, never to see the light of day.

    13. Sorry but I just checked Amazon and eBay and I do not see this Canon S110 for the price you are telling us. The cheapest I see it today is $254.00 on Amazon. Not sure what you are telling us on your blog. Please show me where it can be bought for $159.00
