Yesterday I wrote about a fare deal to fly premium economy to Madrid from $813.
It’s never been as easy or cheap to fly internationally, largely because of ultra low cost carriers across the Atlantic and the rise of Chinese airlines fighting for business from the US and connecting that traffic to Southeast Asia.
However I really value premium cabin fare deals. Because while you can sometimes find transatlantic fares for under $300 roundtrip, and transpacific fares under $400 roundtrip, those would have been great in my youth but I don’t want to fly coach such long distances.
So I really value when we see business class fares especially, but it’s worth highlighting premium economy. With more and more airlines offering premium economy you can now sometimes find deals on that cabin. It’s more or less like domestic first class — so more legroom, more seat width — plus usually a foot rest (in American Airlines’ case, outside of the bulkhead, a foot bar… something Singapore Airlines offers in coach).
American Airlines Premium Economy Boeing 787-9
When you can fly premium economy for the price of coach — or even less – that’s worth sharing. And right now there are tons of premium economy deals to Asia from many cities, mostly on American Airlines but not exclusively.
There are great fares from Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Boston and probably other cities to American Airlines destinations in Greater China — Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong. For instance here is Los Angeles – Beijing for $884 roundtrip.
Key details for fare basis QLE13GN1:
- Outbound travel permitted through December 9 or December 24-31
- 30 day advance purchase
- 3 day minimum travel and 24 hour minimum stay
- $300 refund fee, $250 change fee
Even though this fare is only available through end of year, you can still find Los Angeles – Beijing for under $900 roundtrip in premium economy next year with fare basis QLX73GN1 which is slightly less restrictive, limited to Monday – Thursday travel, but otherwise similar.
Singapore Airlines has its own premium economy deals for San Francisco – Hong Kong at under $1000 roundtrip.
Key details of fare basis P93USRA:
- Outbound travel permitted October 1 – December 13, January 9 – June 9, and July 19 through end of schedule.
- Must purchase by September 13 though the fare may not be around that long.
- Prices are $50 higher for weekend travel
- $200 refund fee, $50 change fee

How many miles to uograde SQ fare to J and what space needs to be available? Where to credit flights?
@Gene – saver availability premium economy from discounted P inventory to business is 52,000 miles each way (!) and books into the same fare class as saver awards. Extra availability (‘advantage’) is 70,000 miles which will usually be offered. see https://www.singaporeair.com/saar5/pdf/ppsclub_krisflyer/charts/SQMI_OneWayUpgradeCharts.pdf
As far as wheretocredit, I’d probably choose United unless you’re an Alaska elite, but see:

AA 181 is pricing at $2370 premium economy for these dates. I checked AA.com for dates before and after Oct 12 and it prices out the same. Mistake fare?
