CLEAR takes your finger prints and retina scan and lets you access airport security checkpoints without ID, and some other venues as well. There’s usually no line to use CLEAR, so you skip the security wait. At busy airports and peak times it can be much better than using PreCheck.
The service is offered by a private company, and you pay for it. However through December 31 you can sign up with six months free using promo code HOLIDAY6M and you can add family members to your account free, too. (They can of course set up their own accounts using this code if they prefer, but then they’ll be paying to renew separate accounts rather than an add-on.)
Here’s why you get CLEAR, PreCheck lines that look like this:
Delta took a stake in CLEAR, and so did United. CLEAR has offered discounts to members of both airline programs, and the airline partnerships made it possible to expand in terminals those carriers control (while American has blocked them from terminals they control).
If you’re already a CLEAR member don’t forget to ask for a free 3 month extension due to the pandemic, and ask a second time if you already asked once.

Precheck lines that look long still move pretty quickly. I have gotten through Newark’s snaking lines in 10 minutes. However if CLEAR saves me the hassle of pulling out my ID or boarding pass, that could be worth signing up for this free trial. Not sure I’d pay for it out of pocket.
I’ve never felt a need for CLEAR. And it’s completely useless during Covid times. Since March, I think my longest wait to see a TSA agent on precheck has been 2 minutes,. Yesterday it was zero minutes.
Clear is pointless in mid market airports like AUS. It takes longer than standard TSA pre in DL hubs, especially ATL… but dagnabbit, there’s no way I’m going to NOT have it. Plus the washable masks they were handing out back in October were dope.
Thanks for the heads up, Gary.
If I get the 6 month trial can I put it on pause for 3 months or is that only for paying members?
Yes, thanks for the info. I put my CLEAR family members on “deactive” and will “reactivate” them when they start traveling.
One of my credit cards was offering a free year of CLEAR, if I remember correctly. However I can’t remember which one. Anyone know of this?
@YoYoPedro – the $100 CLEAR statement credit from Amex Green?
@Gary Leff – That may be the one, as I have one of those… Thanks!
