A Hertz customer accomplished a new feat in the annals of rental car company disservice, actually being charged for a red light ticket before even renting the vehicle.
They rented the vehicle on May 15th at the Calgary Airport for a period of six days, starting at 10:30 p.m. However the agent at the airport logged the rental as starting at 10:30 a.m.
- They were hit with an extra day’s charge, beyond the period they actually had the car for
- And the previous renter “ran a red light at 2:33pm.” But since the system now saw them as having the car at the time, their credit card was hit with $436.50 for the bill.
It would have been impossible for the customer to have had the car at 2:33 p.m. because they were inflight on American Airlines. They provided copies of their boarding passes. Hertz agreed with them about the rental start time – they removed the extra day’s charge – but they still refused to budge on the red light ticket (or the extra fees associated the with the extra day – Hertz removed only the base rental charge). And now Hertz has refused to communicate further, it seems.
Much of the advice to this customer has been to just dispute the charges and that’s fine if you do not plan to rent from Hertz or any of their affiliated companies again. Even a righteous dispute might get you placed on their Do Not Rent list. Hertz has even been known to ban a customer’s descendants, too.
Considering the Hertz toll scam, charging customers who rent Teslas for failing to fill up the gas and of course a history of customers getting arrested just because they rented from the company – and Hertz refusing to admit its mistake lest the police stop believing them when they file false police reports, just getting charged for tickets written by police before you rented the vehicle doesn’t actually seem that bad in the scheme of things?
One Customer’s Idea: A Custom-Wrap In Case Police Show Up
In fact, isn’t this the least you expect to happen to you when you rent from Hertz? And it’s not even their first example of imposing time travel on a customer. Earlier this year I wrote about one person who tried to rent from Hertz for the very first time and found they’d already been banned by the company.
I’m avoiding Hertz at all costs now. They are a dumpster fire. They say no press is bad press…Hertz seems to embrace this fully.
It’s happened to me. A decade ago I rented from Alamo, and they charged me for a ticket incurred 8 hours before my pickup. But unlike what you describe here, in my case, the rental agreement showed my correct pick up time. Someone on their end had mis-entered the date/time of the ticket, and they refused to re-check what the ticket clearly showed. I did dispute, and they never responded to the card company, so I won the dispute. FWIW I’ve rented from them since, so I wasn’t added to the banned list.
Just a glance at the HTZ (Hertz) ticker and see what the stock trajectory looks like, despite the fact that travel has boomed over the past few years will tell the complete story.
Sue them in small claims court for fraud
I strongly suspect this sort of thing comes down to the people that you deal with not having the authority to waive the offending charges.
I continue to ask, how is Hertz still in business?
I understand the head of Hertz is being considered as the next Boeing CEO.
Used to be a frequent renter from Hertz. However, extremely poor service such as no cars available when I arrived for pickup, extremely dirty and smelly cars, charged for an extra day when I returned on time, are just a few of the reasons Hertz should never be a choice. If they think they can get away with it Hertz will try to sneak in extra charges every time. Not worth the aggravation,
How has there not been massive lawsuits against Hertz?
Hertz: up there with Airbnb. Never again.
At this point, if you’re dumb enough to rent from Hertz, I have no sympathy for you. How many of these horror stories does it take for people to throw up their hands and say, “No more.”?
I see Hertz corporate offices are in Flora-dah.
I wonder which Senator (or is it the Gov) that is taking the campaign contributions (bribes) to not be shut down?
It appears corruption is alive and flourishing .
I heard they were renaming to company to Uranus Hertz
What would write about if it wasn’t for Hertz!
They charged me 35 dollars PER DAY of rental for returning electric car not 100 percent charged. They said in agreement that ideally should be returned 80 percent of charged. Totally cool with getting charged for not returning it 100percent charged like it was when I got it, but charging per day makes no sense, it’s only a one time charging needed. Hertz is truly trying to destroy the value of their rental electric cars, should never fill to 100 percent. And fees like this make absolutely no sense.
Used to be a Hertz customer. Too many horror stories now that no amount of cute Tom Brady advertising can overcome. Does seem to be inviting a class action lawsuit.
I’m hesitant to shift my full rental spend to Hertz. I simply do not trust them with my schedule that is my livelihood. They are the POLR.
Keep in mind that all of my rental expenses are for work related purposes. The problem is clear. The solution is also very simple. The entire vendor/ client relationship has changed and that change is the root of poor performance. Shareholders are NOT your paying customers. This needs to ring loudly.
I rent from Hertz and fly Frontier
Back when I banned Hertz, I had been President’s Circle for three+ years. The cars weren’t being maintained adequately anymore, everywhere I found inventory was so low I had to sweat getting a suitable vehicle (despite my status, even when I’d booked over a month in advance), they suddenly shut down my favorite local franchise, and then came the first news articles re glitches causing fines and arrests and Hertz refusing to deal. So I fired Hertz, but Enterprise hasn’t thrilled either. Finally, I just gave in and bought a van, and only occasionally rent nowadays (whenever I occasionally fly because by now I’ve all but fired all the airlines too).
Really ? This isn’t political. Hertz is run by liberals ,and that’s ok,You know this by how they went crazy for EV”s befor getting there systems ready for charging clients properly or fairly. And I don’t blame there political leanings, just the incompetence or failure to run things in a way best for them and thier clients. Not everything is political. P.S. don’t live in Fla. And am an independent.
It’s never far from the airport to Uber to a car rental agency…. #rentawreck
This sounds a lot like Avis/Budget at SFO. extremely poor service such as no cars available when you arrive for pickup, extremely dirty and smelly cars, with high mileage. Charged for an extra day when you returned on time, and, If they think they can get away with it they will try to sneak in extra charges every time. Always check your receipt before leaving the counter.
A couple of years ago while attend my grandson’s graduation, my rental from a different company, not Hertz, was vandalized. They broke in through the front passenger window. A police report was obtained. My insurance company was notified and given a claim number. The rental company was notified that night. Any additional information was given the next day when the car was turned in. Days later I got a message from the rental company that about $150 was going to be added to my CC. My reply included the police report information and my insurance information. They dropped the additional charge and said they were not going to file with my insurance company because it was too much trouble.
No doubt the “Hertz Pre-Crime Unit” was involved. Good work in Pre-Crime visioning
Why would ANYONE rent from Hertz? What are you thinking???
EdSparks58
I really wish there was actual competition for rental cars rather than a dozen names on one or two companies.
Hertz hit me with a $10 administration fee for a $2 toll. Not so sure about the toll either. No proof or photo or documentation. This is a week after I gave them a positive review
I avoid Hertz at all costs. Meanwhile, it would be interesting to see a list of the airline programs and credit card companies that align with Hertz as a member “benefit”. Those companies might be on the “avoid list” as well.
I lost my business credit card due to over charging even when I paid the bill.
I rented from Sixt in Zurich last year. Two months later I get a bill showing they charged me 60CHF for a speeding ticket for going 53 in a 50 zone. Then I later get a bill from Zurich Police asking for 185CHF for speeding. Sixt didn’t pay the ticket but charged me. Credit card company wouldn’t dispute charge so I ignored it. Hated Switzerland and will never rent from Sixt again.
I rented a car in Cancun , hertz gave me a stolen car. I was detained for the local police for more that 8 hours. Hertz did not help me to get out of this situation. Hertz big scammer.
Some moron is actually trying to blame the Florida legislature for the actions of liberal run company? The idiocy just never stops, does it?
Hertz is fine 99.999% of the time – these exceptions have little influence on who I rent from.
Rent a car in Luxembourg for two week.
$565 for two week
Was charge $20 dollars for licence plate
$189 dollars for full coverage for two week
$145 dollars theft coverage for two week
$45 dollars for gas hi only drive the car 75 mile in two week
Taxe etc
By time all cone down he cost me a extra $ 1100 for two week and returned car one day hourly
Keep reading this bad review of Hertz.
Hi allway rent true Hertz, but now is time to look to order company for sure
I rented in 2019 November 3-5 from Hertz LaGuardia, returned on the 5th at 6:45am, the attendant didn’t cash out the contract, but took us to the airport in the rental, on the way back from the airport ran a red light, my card was charged for the ticket, because the rental contract was still opened, tried calling everyone I talked to gave me the runaround, finality gave up!
Since covid we’ve only rented via Turo. Private owners have made life so much easier and no line to wait in.
I am just baffled why anyone would rent from Hertz for any reason. My company had a corporate account with Hertz, I refused to rent from them for a business trip m. A month later, we are now Enterprise customers.
I’m an avid reader of “reviews” of places. I see so many like this story! “I’m never renting here again, use Alamo…” Same with hotels. Lots of verbiage like this– “worst place ever! “Stay anywhere else, like the Hyatt across the street!” ad nauseum.
Then I read the reviews for the places that reviewers said were “way better” than the place they just trashed: guess what? In almost every case those places have EVEN WORSE reviews and horror stories than the place originally reviewed.
Bitching and moaning has become way too common. No one goes out of their way to say a business was nice and fair…on 99 visits. But the ONE TIME there is a problem, we have to let EVERYONE KNOW HOW WE WERE WRONGED! How dare they!
Suck it up and move on.
Breaking News….
To give the company a more realistic name..the Board of Directors just announced that they are changing the company name to “HURTS”!
Picard
Hertz is terrible. I was charged for the insurance even though I declined it three times. Their counter people flat out lied about my personal insurance not covering any accidents. Doubled the cost of the rental. Tried to get the charge reversed and their customer service people were the worst.
https://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/hertz-global-holdings/totals?id=D000064403
For paul…..
Hertz is the worst rental company to rent a car from. you go to pick up the car and they say that they have already called you and there’s no cars the same day and same time you supposed to pick up the car secondly the car was so filthy and so full of marijuana smell until we took sick, very rude Agency they gave me credit but Hertz denied the criedit and did not give me back any of my money they gave me the wrong key to the keyless cars I drove up to the gas station turn off the motor and could not get the car started again it was the wrong key they had to bring me the right key I didn’t get credit for that. I was there waiting for 45 minutes to turn my car in well the person was out when they did come in that morning I was charged another day and why I was there the worker was not there. Emergency light comes on the car. Hats McDonald’s bags ketchup if I can find the pictures I will be posted them at the pictures.
Some of these complaints are petty matters that “come with the territory.” But hitting a customer for a traffic ticket incurred before or after the rental period is inexcusable and should be subject to criminal prosecution, as well as a civil lawsuit with punitive damages. By the way, it happens in other contexts as well. I once commenced work for a company and was called before an administrator for unauthorized access to a particular area. The administrator had some difficulty understanding that it could not have been me because it occurred three weeks before I had started at the company and must have been by whatever person previously had been assigned that access card.
I have literally landed at Calgary airport on AA from Dallas at 10pm and only to be told they didn’t have an SUV (which I paid premium for) and given a Ford 500. They neither seemed to care or were surprised that I was not happy.
This is a bad franchise in a bad chain.
Rented from Thrifty at MSP, turns out it is Hertz……UGH They charged me $85 for a tank of gas when i told her that the tank was full and i took a picture of the fuel indicator. THRIFTY was a total waste to correct i HAD TO put a claim in with my credit card and showed proof 15 min before that i filled it up.
I dumped Herrz (about twenty rentals a year) when the car class I reserved wasn’t available and then was charged extra for a better model (this was in LAX). I requested a refund from Hertz corporate but was basically told to pound salt. Took my business to National.
So if disputing the charge results in a lifetime ban from renting from Hertz, is that a bad thing?
I for one admire Hertz. It takes cojones the size of bowling balls to acknowledge you didn’t rent the car during the time it was ticketed, but still demand that you pay the ticket.
I rented from thrifty and returned the car on time and filled up. They charged me an 400 dollars for the not being washed.
Common sense tells you not to rent from Hertz even if they’re giving you the car for free. There’s always something with Hertz and it’ll cost you your money, your freedom, or both.
Hertz is the most incompetent and greedy rental company ever. They charged my account 3 times after I returned the rental. I will never rent from that company ever again. I will be going back to Enterprise for my rentals. Hertz filed for bankruptcy back in 2020. They should have just gone bankrupt and not be in business.
Really ? Renting from Hertz, after everything we know, is exactly the same as voting for Felon Trump : INCOMPREHENSIBLY DELUSIONAL THINKING.
This isn’t political. Hertz is run by bunch of dumb, greedy, conservative MAGA corporate hicks in Florida, and that’s ok.. You know this by how they went crazy buying up every EV on the planet, then hoping to cash out on high resales values – that is until Elon Musk snuffed out that fantasy for them by drastically lowering the sticker prices on Tesla’s.
And I don’t blame them for their political leanings – just the absolute, total incompetence and utter failure to run a consumer-facing business, in a method that is best for both their customers and shareholders.
Not everything is political. And I do live in Florida, and also a registered independent voter, like 40% of us are these days. ps: Remember to act like a TRUE Patriotic American: Register To Vote NOW + VOTE Nov 5th
Hertz does not exist. If there is no car but a Hertz car available, there is no car available. Until Gary declares the problems are solved, I will look for other companies, transit, Uber/Lyft, or walk.
Fundamentally Hertz has found a way to make money by being shits to their clients.
Matt Soleyn says:
> Sue them in small claims court for fraud
There are options. All the stuff above… that’s the TL;DR. Enjoy.
Stuff below, well, enjoy that too. I am not a lawyer.
Fraud is a criminal offense. Prosecutors bring these actions. It can also be sued in civil court. However, in small claims court the only thing you can sue for is money damages. Damages must be proved. There are no injunctions. Depending on jurisdiction there’s no recordation, no class status, and no precedent.
So yeah if you want to waste your time and money you can sue them for your $200-$400 thingie and maybe YOU will be “made whole” but don’t count those chickens.
What to really do if you’re not a schnoozlazydoodlebug:
1. Write their legal department a nice professional letter. Have it served on them. (If you’re wondering “which email address should I send it to” just give up.)
2. GIve them a deadline. 5 business days is unkind. 7 regular days just as much. 30 is reasonable.
3. File suit against them in civil court. Request class cerification for anyone similarly situated. Ensure you ask for both statutory fees and penalties and anything else the court will award. Request a jury trial.
4. Once dates are assigned and your “meeting with opposing council” is set, ask for it to be virtual OR for them to come to you. If you got your venue&jurisdiction right it’s where you sat at your desk and made the online reservation, NOT where Hertz wants it to be because you hit a button that says “I agree” without reading the text. Which you did.
5. Have a list of what you want them to provide you in “discovery”. At the very least “Any and every record, database entry, email, call, recordings, or any other documents” which are “relating to this rental, any rental ever held by me, my family, my household, people at my address” and “everyone else possibly similarly situated.” Dont’ forget to add “Provided in a human or machine readable format, on a free public document sharing website such as Google cloud, etc. AND ALSO acceptable on a USB flash drive formatted to be readable without extra software on Microsoft Windows, Apple MacOS, and Linux
6. Deadline that one. Again 30 days is cool.
7. Serve it on them
8. FIle same with the court
9 On day 31 (see #6) file a motion to compel with the court.
10 Let the court have its time. If it doesn’t work quick enough for you, 7 days past #9 file an order to show cause (OSC).
That’s al ethical, reasonable, and likely to get your damages removed and some penalty added. Depending on how the court sees it you should ask for an injunction preventing Hertz from doing this again, adding penalties if they do, etc. Some courts won’t see it that way.
If you really want to be the “special” litigant, start asking for business records in discovery. How many claims do they file annually? How much money do they get? How much is returned back? How often are they sued.
Puzzling.. The Hertz ticker forecast is that Hertz stock will at least double in value during next year (????)
I had the same thing happen with the same company. I was charged a toll, a processing fee, and a service charge totaling over $50. It was 3 hours before I picked up the car.
In January 2024, a woman who was driving a Hertz rental, was on her phone chasing her boyfriend that was in another vehicle. She hit me and then slammed in to my friends car that was in front of me on a street with 45 mph speed limit. She was speeding and I’m pretty sure she was intoxicated. The cops never questioned me and did a below subpar job processing the scene. They didn’t want to be there doing their job. So, even though photos of damage to all 3 vehicles told EXACTLY what happened, not to mention her story/excuse changed 3 different time while at the scene, the inadequate report the rookie cops made was all Hertz went by to deny paying the damages to our cars. When the photos obviously showed who is at fault. My friends vehicle is totaled. Her insurance took the hit and she’s paying a huge increase on it now. My damages were estimated at almost $3k and I’m paying out of pocket so my insurance don’t go up. Hertz sux. Hertz is a tyrant of a company and with as many complaints as they have, why are they still in business? Someone needs to sue the crap out of them and put them out of business.
They seem to have a real issue with getting the right time. I got charged two extra days once because they put the dropoff in as Monday when the car was dropped off Saturday. The office was even open Saturday so there was no “oh it was the weekend” excuse.
When they screw you, and they will, the first time it Hertz.
There’s a reason Hertz has lost my business. They’re a trash company, and they know it, which is why they don’t give a hoot if their brand suffers damage.
Hertz has proven time after time that they have no idea where there cars are at any given time, stolens cars rented to customers a regular occurrence. They are in such a pinch for cash they will charge you and take months to credit it back to they count it as revenue. That questionable practice of showing revenue growth started years ago.
Your best bet stay far away from Hertz. Avis Budget group and National Enterprise will cover your needs needs. Want this practice to stop the only answer is boycott, refuse t9 rent and then things might change.
People needs to report hertz to BBB ASAP about the charges they charge people with that makes no sens
This sounds like Hertz. I used them in Baltimore earlier this year. Gassed up less than a mile from the return— full tank. They went ahead and charged me $80 for an empty tank. Took 2 hours of arguing to get the charge reversed.
Lawyer, get a lawyer. I do not see how this could be legal. Make them pay for their arrogance and your lawyers fees.
I don’t know who comes up with the policies for these people but their shit. I was online on my way to the Dominican Republic on United airlines using the internet before I land it I saw the car that I want it it was $34 today and they asked you if you want to output the extra insurance I chose no because it’s already an insured vehicle otherwise they wouldn’t be able to use it for renting I know how to system works it’s a gimmick. Now whenever it came time for me to pay the price went up because of taxes and fees to something like $50 a day okay that’s fair enough I’ll pay that so I went ahead and paid that. Whenever I arrive went to their little calendar there The guy checked all my information he wanted extra proof of my birthday for some reason. But then whenever it came time for me to get the car he told me that I owed them $1,700 and something dollars I asked what the hell I’ve already paid for this What are you talking about he said oh well since you’re not going to get the insurance then we have to cover the cost of whatever damages might happen the vehicle I said you already have insurance on the vehicle there’s no need to pay extra insurance on a vehicle that there’s that doesn’t make any sense. I asked are you trying to tell me that you have to have two types of insurance to cover the vehicles cost there isn’t that included in my cost and the guy said well we’re not responsible for anything that happens to the car and while you’re in it said you okay but you have insurance on the car in other words you walk me around in circles trying to make a circular argument that didn’t go anywhere and I understood that and I told him well I’ve already paid for the thing so you’re telling me that what I pay for online you’re not going to honor here and he said try to give me some other rigmarole crap and basically I just said okay screw you I’m walking out I found somebody else local who I charged me $24 a day didn’t have to pay extra insurance and I got to drive around the class of vehicle that I wanted. That’s another thing they did not give me the class of vehicle that I paid for they wanted me to give me a lower class vehicle I didn’t care if I had the exact car that I wanted as long as it would fit the amount of people that I had but they wanted to play games and he said okay to hell with it and I left it and I will never deal with her to ever again.
Hertz is a parasitic company. Feeding on the backs of it’s hosts. Disgusting Hertz.
Yet another reason never to use Hertz. (There are already so many.)
Company owned by vulture capital preys on customers. Film at 11.
Seriously, how much more proof does anyone need that this is systemic. You are all tax cattle living in an economic zone consisting of various scams, rackets, and money laundering schemes. But keep thinking everything is fine and normal.
I just rented a car from Dollar, owned by Hertz. We reserved the Managers Special, an EV with a 200 mile range between charges. I said no, I wanted a gas vehicle. They said that was an upgrade and with add one more than double the original quoted price. We eventual got some of that removed. When we keto actually get the car there was a ding in the windshield, a scratch in the door and rows of black electrical tape across the hood of the car. We said no, we want another car.
You rent from them and they screw you, you have no one to blame but yourself. I cannot fathom that the authorities and regulatory agencies have let them go scot free. Credit cards get me top status with them but no thanks!
No Thank You, Automatically put me on the never rent from Hertz list. Company is mismanaged, extremely poor customer service, riddled with problems. Anyone renting from Hertz is doing so at their own risk. There should be warnings at the door that warn you that you will be subject to false and misleading fees, subject to getting pulled over for driving stolen rental vehicles. You might even be putting your own life in danger by renting from Hertz.
Years ago returned hertz car to a 3rd party vendor. Thank the almighty I kept the drop off receipt. Weeks later I get a $2200 repair bill and 2 extra day rental.
The Boyz at the return place joy rided the car and tried to stick it on me. ALLLLWWAAYYSS check your credit card statements and charges every week. I got a two day rental coupon for my inconvenience WOO
WOO
Take them to Judge Judy
I guess hertz customers nowadays are like trump maga imbeciles. Down deep they know they will get screwed but still do it.
And afterwards they complain about President Biden…
Why would you even WANT to rent from a company that pulls this crap? Hertz is now off my list. It’s the CUSTOMER who should be putting Hertz on THEIR Do Not Rent list; disputing the charge with their credit card company and refusing to pay the fallacious ticket amount; blasting the company on social media to warn other potential customers to steer clear; AND finally calling their local news or other media outlet investigative reporter or consumer advocate to pursue just resolution of the case. They might also contact the state Attorney General at home or in the state of rental to file a complaint. Don’t take this sitting down!
I to received 2 administration charges €20 each from Hertz for 2 infringements in France exactly 1 hour apart, said the weren’t able to give information about infringements that would come from police. 18 months later still no fines?
So why do I care if this unethical abusive company refuses to rent me a car? I have never been anywhere that Hertz was the only company that had a rental car.
I wouldn’t do business with them, and if you do it’s on you.
Hertz doesn’t need to put me on their banned list. I just put them on mine. Any company acting as they do certainly doesn’t need my money. There are oodles of other places to rent cars from, including Turo.
Our friend in this article should not only contest the charge with his credit card company but also file a fraud complaint against Hertz in the locality where he is alleged to have run the red light. This can be done online in most cities/states now.
Hertz will milk you for every penny they can get away with. I had to close my first checking account due to them back in the day. I was just starting college when the new car I bought, had a time chain belt issue, which left me without a car for a week. I was a kid basically, and there was no such thing as a Visa or Madtercard debit cards like they have today. No credit card, be prepared to leave a deposit that you can kiss goodbye, as back then not a single friend of mine, ever got their deposits back. Hertz always had an excuse or fee. With me, I filled out the forms and waited hours to find out they did a credit pull without my othorizatuon, nor told me of any fees for processing such an application. I have only been driving 3 years, no credit history, so obviously they turned me down for a car. Even with deposit . They handed me back the application with my check, and the car dealer ended up loaning me a car.
Few days later, my bank manager called me to ask if I wrote a check for $950. My bank was pretty good when it came to emergencys..If I needed to write a check for more than I had, my bank manager would approve it, long as it was reasonable, and I asked first. That $950 check, would have overdrawn me by $500. Also found out they had presented a $300 that did post day prior. I told the bank manager I wrote no such checks, and even brought the decline notice, showing they refused me a rental. My bank manager refused the large check, and reversed the $300, plus refunded me the $8 NSF fees. After Hertz tried to present them again, my bank manager had me close the account out, and opened a new one, not to mention lecture me on who never to write checks to. Hertz only copied the info. I no clue what the fees were for, but the nightmare didn’t end here. I was about 19 or 20 when this happened. Two months go by, when I get a call from a district attorney over in Hauppague, about several large bad checks I wrote???!!! Yup, when Hertz tried stealing my checking info and failed getting money, plus the reversed $300, they reported me as a bad check writer for prosecution. The DA was very nice. He also helped me a year later with a bogus car insurance seller. After talking on the phone, he had me come down and made copies of my paperwork from Hertz. He also got a letter from my car dealer about the loaner. He mailed me a certified letter that Hertz was at fault, and I was innocent of any wrong doing. Few years later, a collection agency called. Yup, Hertz doesn’t give up, EVER. Gave them the DAs number, and never heard back. As for the bogus car insurance company. State Farm was the company. They had a rep who was putting assigned risk customers, onto adults policy’s without anyone’s permission or knowledge. State farm fired the guy, but at the same time stole $800 from me that I never got back. Kinda strange how I never sued then like everyone else.
First take a pic of the drop-off location; than take a pic of the dash, that shows your odometer reading & the true fuel-gauge (ICE) or EV- hydro -level, as the case may be; follow this up with 1 pic each of the FLQ (front left quarter; the RLQ; the RRQ & the FRQ, and finally another pic if the drop-off location….this tedious process confirms the condition of the vehicle at time of delivery.
If anyhow possible, select “date & time” as photo-ID, then email these photos (re-sized to 30%) as attachments, not embedded in the email-body, to yourself and retain in an eFolder for 9 months (the legal time limit for claims).
We rent lots of vehicles at our company, and this ptocess is the only one which will get you off the hooks in a court of law in Canada as well as the USA!
I think it depends on the franchisee?
Once at LHR I rented from Avis. The guy pushed comprehensive coverage but I declined. He clearly want happy and grumpily have me the keys he picked from a locker.
When I returned the car, it was a 4th or 5th floor garage and badly lit. You know what? The attendant looked at his tablet and went straight for the front left wheel. Said the tire was cut and I had to pay for the damages!

I got banned from Enterprise and had to use Hertz for the last 5 years. I have had zero issues… guess I am lucky?
Serious question… why do people continue to rent from Hertz when there are many other car rental companies around? I typically rent a car once or twice per year and haven’t encountered any situation where there weren’t better and/or cheaper alternatives to Hertz. I’ve done just fine with National, Alamo, and Budget (and Avis in the distant past).
Which makes me wonder, why do people do it? Are Hertz renters masochistic or the risk-seeking type?
Twice now, Hertz has issued a reservation to us and refused to honor the price they committed to. Once I was able to get satisfaction by asking to talk to the regional manager. Once we had to pay about double the agreed price. We no longer consider Hertz when renting a car.
Hertz owns DOLLAR and THRIFTY so if you see a deal with one of them but is banned by Hertz you are banned by DOLLAR and THRIFTY too.
Complete ASSHOLES. Money talks… a HUGE class action or Federal regulatory law suit might take a little air out of their sails.
Horrible experience with Hertz. I accepted their Loss Damage Waiver. The passenger side brushed against a fence as I had to back down a very narrow lane in the dark, due to construction. The very minor damage supposedly came to over $600. Then I received a brief statement that the LDW would not cover it, with no further explanation. I fought the charge and at least got the LDW reimbursed by my bank, on the grounds that they sold it to me in bad faith. Hertz continued to pursue me, and now has sent my account to a collection agency. Never, never again will I rent from them. Pure scam artists.
Hertz is a disgusting company who has no morales, values, honesty, entigrity or ethics. The US Government needs to keep Hertz on a tight leash.
Been on the ban list for years.
Had a car that was hail damaged during a business trip. Company I worked for ended up paying $3,000 to fix the vehicle even after taking their insurance. Next time I went to rent, found out I had been blacklisted with Hertz claiming I still owed $3,000 and they had no record of being paid. When I sent them their own receipts their response was to stop responding.
Message received, lesson learned.
@Quo Vadis
I’ve personally had many, many horror stories with Hertz’ competitors (including a recent court-case with Avis) but never any issues with Hertz. And, for me, Hertz is cheaper for high-tier cars (eg Escalade) than Avis, National etc in 9 times out of 10. Thats why I continue to rent from Hertz 🙂
Hertz is THE WORST.I try to warn everybody I know that needs acquired never to go through them especially because of all the nightmare stories of people getting arrested and pulled out of their car whole families because the company has turned the car in his stollen. I’d love to see that company just shut down!!!
Hertz is absolutely the worst!! Another driver backed into the door of my rental and even though his insurance paid for the repairs, I was charged for the loss of use and diminished value for over $2,000. Neither insurance company would pay. I will never rent from them again. My insurance company told me that other rental companies don’t usually charge those expenses.
They are the worst. I will never rent from them again.
Sounds like Hurtz is the equivalent of the UK Post Office scandal. A law unto themselves. Beware
I have been a Gold member for nearly two decades and have not had any issues at all. I read the stories of people having problems with Hertz but to date I must have a Angel looking over my shoulder. For me, the rates are well within my budget and I’ve enjoyed the seamless process of renting and returning my vehicle; however, I’m aware of the issues others have experienced. For now, I’ll continue to rent from Hertz as it has been convenient with no problems.
More than happy to ban Hertz frpm my life for life 🙂 what douche bags
I rented from Hertz once. This past April. Never again. I’ll not detail the litany of thorns I endured, and continue to endure, trying to retrieve my property (GPS, EZ-Pass, cash, etc) which was in the car when they had it towed from the motel parking lot for a computer foul up on my credit card.
How are they paying for the previous renters mistake? I’d be taking hertz to court, that’s low even for today’s shit greedy world

If they rent cars with leather seats then they have chosen to not honestly care about life. That means much more than any law made by man. If people ignore needless and preventable killing and expect those that do those things needlessly to behave then they are behaving as out of line as a person expecting people with drug addictions to behave reliable.
Hertz did it to me also I think this company is a scam
I’ve written about Hertz before. They are beyond shady. Deny insurance, yet insurance is in your contract. You’re at the airport and in a hurry obviously so you sign the contract thinking you’re not paying for insurance because you just declined it. Yet you get a charge worth more than the rental for insurance and there’s nothing that can be done because you signed a contract that they snuck insurance on. This company sucks, Hertz your wallet as the wife and I say.
Why is this and similar actions not fraud. Hello FTC consumer protection agency. Looks like Hertz is involved in deceptive practices, maybe.
The other problem is that some major companies have agreements with Hertz. Their travel departments will utilize them if they have a location where you’re traveling; and; usually; they do. You can almost automatically become a Gold customer without paying any fees.
I’m currently living a Hertz nightmare rental story. Was upsold and deceived by a counter agent to the tune of a $1,200 additional charge for my rental. Countless phone calls and complaint submissions proved fruitless, so I challenged the charges with my credit card company. They immediately refunded and are dealing with Hertz for me. I will NEVER use Hertz again!
I would NEVER rent from Hertz. A couple years ago an out-of-town friend came to see me and rented from Hertz in Miami. He got about a half block from the car rental center when the engine died, and every light imaginable lit up the dash. He walked back, told the Hertz agent where the car was. Hertz wanted to charge him for a full day’s rental plus a huge towing fee. They’re a disgusting company.
I just rented a car (May 2024) from Hertz in Paris, France. I had it for two days and was charged $2,300 (usd). I was seriously taken advantage of. I was tired, jet lagged and didn’t have other rental options. In addition, I waited in line for nearly an hour to get my rental. Be careful if you are going to the Paris Olympics. Take a taxi don’t rent from Hertz. I never will again!!
In case people didnt know despite there being like 6 or 7 well known car rental agencies, there is in fact only three! There is Hertz and there is Enterprise and Avis that’s it folks. Why do I say this? Well I’ll tell you why. Hertz Global not only owns Hertz it also owns Thrifty and Dollar Rent a car as well as Firefly Rent a car. Enterprise owns not only Enterprise but they own National and Alamo rent a car as well. Last but not least is Avis also known as Avis Budget group and they own Avis, Budget, Payless and Zipcar as well. And despite being “competitors” in the market alot of times they work together to create the daily rental costs on vehicles and share their do not rent lists with eachother which can lead to you being banned from renting a car almost anywhere if you have been banned from one of them. Any smaller rental agancies are quickly and ruthlessly edged out of business by these three companies to ensure there is no actual competition. They’re corrupt and don’t care about the consumer. Profit is their mission and no one is going to stand in the way of that.
I have to respond to the comment by David Wishengrad. What does leather have to do with the article and about false charges? Perhaps you should post on a PETA page and stop wasting space here regarding your love of cows. I love leather and beef!
I agree with above post. Leather seats are wonderful. Man made materials don’t even come close to the luxurious feel and breathability of genuine leather.
To answer others’ questions: At many major US airports Hertz is by far the most inexpensive if you don’t want to take a shuttle off-site. So many people take their chances that they won’t get falsely arrested or have to deal with bogus charges like this. I have chosen to just avoid them out of principle even if the odds are my experience will be uneventful.
We rented an electric car by the suggestion of Hertz and it was the worst idea that they’ve ever had they were no charging stations along 95 that we could easily find and when we did find one it didn’t exist because it had been removed even after we drove an hour out of 95 towards Florida it was a disaster and we want nothing to do with electric cars and I’ll tell you it was we’ll never drive one again it was just really really a bad experience all the way around and it hurts really didn’t give a crap.
Many of the comments are asking why anyone would rent from Hertz when things like this happen. My questions are what is Hertz’ response and what are they doing to correct these ongoing issues? When I read this article, it seems obvious that they would ack they’re in the wrong and would correct the issue. Is there more to it?
It was only a few years ago that Hertz was hit with a large fine for incorrectly/falsely accusing hundreds of people of stealing their cars.

Now lets see, if I’m a retired cowboy boot maker, (Santa Fe, N.M.) and I eat at fast food restaurants and I love many different things, people, “ya most of the time”, animals, water with fish and water without fish in it, my yard, my land, my country, my earth, but I’m still a bad guy because I have teeth that are made to chew meat, grind up plants and and a body that is built to handle both. So God made my original body design for both plant and animal and so HE made a mistake on his designing board? Fat chance on that idea! I’ll see you someplace but it may not be in heaven.
It is bogus to say hertz would not fully fix this customers issue.
I swore to never use Hertz again when they scammed me as a college student in 1985. I have rented hundreds of cars since then from all the other vendors without incident. They were a rotten company back then and it seems nothing has changed. They are the toilet in a house full of appliances.
companies are scamming customers left and right. Saks is blocking returns and holding on to customer funds by cancelling partial orders with their “discount via gift card” and then holding on the money.
where is the dept for consumer protection?
I avoid Hertz and have for years. I avoid Avis now also. I returned a car in Wichita Kansas early in the morning before open as I had an early flight. I put the keys in the drop box. I filled the car up outside of the airport. I got billed for filling up the tank of 18 gallons. The tank was full., so I guess I filled up an employees tank. I had a receipt from the station, but they would not take off the charge.
A car I rented from Hertz at KCI broke down on the Kansas Turnpike at 11:00 p.m. I was told that they could not bring me a replacement car. Hertz said to pay the tow truck driver and that they would pay me back. When I returned to KCI with the second rental car, the manager submitted a refund on my credit card. When the refund did not show up on my credit card statement I called Hertz and found that the manager’s refund was not approved by Hertz. I went through the process of submitting an appeal through Hertz for the $370 it cost for the tow. The appeal was denied. I called the manager who said there was nothing he could do since the refund was not approved by the main office at Hertz. I will never rent from Hertz again!
Jeanie – We can tell you’re MAGA by the way you misue grammar.
Why is this company still in business? I complained about blatant lies by one of their kiosk reps at the Phoenix airport location (trying to upswell me by telling me that the economy car I rented was actually an electric Smart car with no broom for luggage—even showing me a photo of it) then trying to charge me double for a regular cat (they don’t even rent Smart cars)! No one bothered to respond to my complaints. No call back from the manager after numerous attempts.
Try using ENTERPRISE never ever an issue..unless u r really really stupid, you have the option to go elsewhere, RUN THIS COMPANY SUCKS…
Hi yes me too I was charged 1000$ extra saying that I upgraded when they actually gave me an upgrade I didn’t want because I had been waiting two hrs over my reservation time for a vehicle the airport…there’s no way that I requested a mini van being a single male lol..anyhow they had a make shift reciept not the one they had gave me but one they had produced showing me the charges anf i had no proof because i had thrown it away…so after being charged and told not can be done because they had proof i went outside dug through trash anf walla there the receipt took about a week to return my money i didn’t even get a sorry…if i hadn’t found the receipt would have cost me 1000 ….I have all the correspondence of there shadyness also…
This is theft, plain and simple.
This is one of the reasons I rent from Enterprise.
We ( customers) got a solution, just do not rent from them anymore.I will apply this from now on.
They will run out of customers that they can screw.
I, too, have had some issue with, Hertz. I, fortunately was able to get credited back. Take photos of EVERYTHING! If you have an, American Express card, use it! They are amazing in disputing your case. Remember to read everything before you sign, especially if you are reserving on-line. Good luck.
Consumers must voice their concerns with their decisions. I will not rent from hertz again.
Hertz stock is down 90% in 3 years. PE of 5.31?! Some opportunities perhaps? Hedge fund takeover folks please give a wink first…
Hertz has been a disaster for years. Even as President Circle members we kept running into problems with my wife and we used to rent from many stations around US and Europe. People still renting with them are just playing the lottery to become the next victim of their mismanagement and disregard for customer service. Had much better luck after we switched to National/Enterprise.
They ripped us off for $289. We declined accident coverage. They checked the box anyway. The form was signed and we were on their hook. They won’t make an adjustment. Do not rent from these crooks.
I have not rented with Hertz since being discriminated upon by them. Long story so won’t go into due to all the examples in this article. Just say having 1000k hold on my card for a 6 hour rental finally did me in for them. I recently did priceline where they pick a rental company and you do not know until after paying. It was Hertz lucky I found a better price and was able to get out of it due to priceline price guarantee. Hertz never EVER AGAIN FOR ME.

Josh, I can tell you voted for a senile old man currently residing in the White House, judging by your spelling.
I guess I have been lucky. I use them all the time and have never had an issue. I do everything online, where price, duration, extras, etc, are very clear. I use my AmEx Platinum credit card instead of their insurance since I figured Amex is large enough to get their attention. The one thing I do, however, is to take a photo of the car in the lot when I return it, so there is no issue that I returned it. Smartphones show the date and geolocation, but I always get a receipt right there or a few minutes after I return it. I did a key drop once in Florida, and it was fine. I also only pick up and return to airports and not city offices. However, I may feel differently if I were the victim of one of these situations. If I need to pick up in a city, I use Enterprise,
I will never rent a car from Hertz. So glad I do not have to consider working for this viper company.
Hertz is in really bad shape for its earlier blunders and now cheat its customers repeatedly such as charging more than $400 for returning a car to the allegedly “wrong” area of the agreed upon airport
Latest (and last Hertz) rental. The agent tells me to pick any car in row 1 or 2. There’s only ONE gas-powered car (which is what I had a reservation for). The rest all electric. So I load my bags and drive to the exit gate, only to be told by the attendant that the car is reserved for someone else. So he makes the two cars behind me back up and I have to drive back to the counter. I have to wait for the same agent to finish up with another customer. Then he changes the rental car info so that I can keep the car. Whoever reserved the car in advance was in for a surprise.
This was the final (of several) incidents with Hertz. My experience with Avis seems to be working out better, so far.
I rented from Hertz at LAX in December & never again. I had prepaid through AMEX Travel to get my travel credit & when I arrived was told I had to purchase “California” insurance or they wouldn’t rent to me. That was $23.99 + tax per day. Then when I returned I topped off the tank and paid cash (my mistake) but got the receipt & took a copy of it. One week later Hertz sends me a bill for $128 for returning the car less than full. Disputed with Hertz & they never responded – disputed with AMEX & they responded they would sue me for fraud if I tried to dispute charge. Provided copies of receipts & pictures – still wouldn’t budge. Filed dispute with California AG Office & within 2 weeks they responded to AG with an apology, stating they will use it as a teaching moment & full refund of the Cali insurance & fuel charge. Never actually admitted they were wrong, but through their actions they did. The AG office obviously carries a lot of clout. More & more finding that car rental interactions are the most stressful part of the trip.
