In Australia a summer Covid-19 outbreak was linked to a guard having sex with an arriving passenger in a quarantine hotel. The guard then brought the virus with him out into the community.
In countries where Covid-19 has been contained, quarantines are taken seriously. Taiwan was one of the earliest successes in keeping the virus at bay (though out of deference to China, the World Health Organization refused to acknowledge it).
In Kaohsiung, in Taiwan’s south, a quarantining arrival from the Philippines was caught on hotel surveillance camera leaving his room and walking a few feet down the corridor in order to leave something outside the door of the next room where a friend was staying. “wearing shorts and flip-flops, could be seen taking six lumbering strides between his room and that of his neighbor, before turning around.”
He was fined $3,550. That’s a significant amount for a migrant worker.
In the U.S. politicians record videos telling people not to travel, from their vacation timeshares in Cabo or while waiting for flights to begin their holiday trips.
This is probably why Taiwan achieved 200 days without local transmission back in October. And crazy they could do it as a democracy
Brock Turner was fined a jail sentence for spending a very brief moment where he should not have been. To wit, sometimes the length of time spent is immaterial.
Who is Brock Turner?
Brock Turner is a rapist who should spend several years in jail, be fined at least a few digits (with most of the money going to his victim), and undergo significant therapy before they even think of letting him out in public again.
Wouldn’t have thought of that analogy but it makes sense. I wish New York were that strict meeting plane and train arrivals. I wish our national leadership…never mind, I gave up long ago.
Taiwan i doing something right. ~800 cases from Mar till now. No community infection.
