On Tuesday night’s American Airlines flight AA2198 from Charlotte to Washington National airport, a passenger clearly wearing a mask was removed from the aircraft after an apparent ‘joke’ about not wearing a mask. Other passengers around her can be heard asking the airline not to take the time to remove her, and just let everyone get on their way. The flight’s departure was delayed 15 minutes, but they still arrived six minutes early into DC.

The woman was wearing a Trump hat, and some passengers around her claimed she was kicked off for being a Trump supporter. That on its own seems unlikely, but the hat combined with the “dry sense of humor” in the woman’s telling, could have led crew to assume she was going to create an issue over mask wearing inflight and worry about having to divert. She may have done something earlier to suggest she wouldn’t wear a mask, backed off that, and cabin crew reacted with (as they say) ‘an abundance of caution’.
According to American Airlines,
Last night, a customer on American Airlines flight 2198 with service from Charlotte International Airport (CLT) to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) was asked to deplane prior to departure for failing to comply with our face covering policy.
To ensure the well-being of our customers and team members, American Airlines requires all individuals over the age of two to wear face coverings throughout the travel journey — at airports and onboard. Customers are reminded of these guidelines throughout their time traveling with American. Those unwilling to comply with American’s face covering policy at any time during their journey may be denied boarding or barred from future travel for the duration of this policy.
For her part, the woman objects “this is supposed to be the United States of America!” And all I can hear is the ‘no texting or talking’ PSA from my local Austin movie theater chain (“Magnited States Of America”).
Meanwhile onboard another American Airlines flight from Dallas to DC a passenger projected “Trump 2020” onto the ceiling of the aircraft. One passenger yelled out criticisms of Joe Biden, while another cursed back at them.

AA sucks. There’s not much more to say. I’ve only ever had good flight attendants on AA, but stories like this one affirm how privileged (lucky) I must be.

If you don’t want to wear a mask fly Allegiant. If you ask a flight attendant about another passenger who refuses to wear a mask except while passing the jetway counter and hen pocketing the mask for the whole flight they just threaten to have you put on the no fly list for not minding your own business.

I’m totally with AA on this. We’re in a pandemic with thousands dying every day, and that’s no joking matter. The LAST thing anyone needs is a passenger causing problems in the air and having to divert. Much better to offload them at the beginning than to go through that.

I was just on a flight on Monday and there was a baby running all over the terminal and never had a mask on the flight attendants told her 2 times she still didn’t. They did nothing about. This woman had a mask on and made a joke, yes maybe not in good taste but rule that AA has is to comply with a face covering which she had done. I have AA 6 times in the past 2 months as I am a traveling nurse and go where I’m needed, she did as instructed. Not her fault people in bad taste can’t take a joke. And aren’t all AA employees supposed to be in uniform, last time I checked a gray cheap suit isn’t it.

American airlines dead wrong for this. Unless there is a specific rule that forbids joking, they should not have kicked her off. I don’t like when ppl joke about sensitive matters but I wouldn’t force them off the plane. The kicked person and the group with which she traveled are very close friends. The joke was, as the attendant asked my friend to replace her very well-made double layer mask with a flimsy single layer paper mask which had one side of elastic broken, my friend said, “This seems kinda stupid.”
