Most airline mileage credit cards have fees. At least the ones that earn one mile per dollar. And some people are just against paying fees — imagine that! I will say that it may be worth it. If the card is earning you a free ticket per year and the fee is $50, that seems like a pretty good tradeoff. It can even be a good tradeoff compared to free cards if you’re spending enough on the card. I’ve previously noted a loophole that lets you transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to United Mileageplus miles, even though United does not participate in Membership Rewards. The gist was transferring Membership Rewards points into Continental miles, transferring the Continental miles into Amtrak points, and then transferring the Amtrak points into United miles. (This method also allowed you to move miles out of Continental and into United.) The loophole has been tightened somewhat: Amtrak limits the number of Points that a Member can redeem for Program Partners or Merchants frequent traveler points and/or miles in a calendar year (including but not limited to United MileagePlus, Continental OnePass, Midwest Express Frequent Flyer and Hilton HHonors). Credit Cards for Earning Miles. My favorite card is the Starwood American Express which lets you earn 1.25 points/dollar in pretty much any airline program you want. My very first post told you how to get complimentary Gold Status with Hilton. I should note some additional things — that you should get 1000 points for signing up automatically; that you can “update” your profile by changing your address/email address/etc. for another 1000 points (and do it twice per quarter for points); and that you can sign up for their no fee American Express card for 7500 bonus points and their no-fee Visa for 10000 points. That’s 20,500 points instantly — which is worth two free full weekends of Hilton hotels. Not bad for filling out a couple of forms on-line.
