A roundup of the most important stories of the day. I keep you up to date on the most interesting writings I find on other sites – the latest news and tips.
Ryanair CEO Says Norwegian Running Out of Cash, Won’t Survive Winter
The CEO of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary, gave an interview where he claimed that Norwegian “will go in four or five months. They are running out of cash. They are scrabbling around daily.”
He calls out that they “may not survive through the winter.”
American Airlines Just Rolled Out Basic Economy Fares Across The Domestic Route Network
American Airlines told us they planned to roll out Basic Economy fares across their domestic route network in September. I didn’t expect them to do it the day after Labor Day. Of course I suppose it shouldn’t surprise that the thing American Airlines IT delivered on-time was the least customer-friendly move in the known pipeline.
Stock Markets Prefer Airlines That Treat Customers Well
Southwest Airlines doesn’t charge for checked bags, doesn’t charge change fees, doesn’t charge for carry on bags either.
It also carries more domestic passengers than any other airline. Its stock has the highest price-earnings multiple of US airlines.
New Self-Cleaning TSA Bins Help Make Security Checkpoints Less Gross
A TSA checkpoint is a bigger germ farm than the monkey in Outbreak. If you don’t have PreCheck you have to take off your shoes, and the checkpoint floors can be as bad as a domestic airline lavatory at the end of a Hong Kong flight.
Your fellow sick passengers touch the bins, they even put their dirty tissue sand handkerchiefs in them before going through the nude-o-scope pockets empty. TSA provides their employees with blue gloves, not you.
Transfer Bonus: Earn a Ratio of 1 Starwood Point -> 1.625 American Miles
From end of April through mid-June they ran a 25% conversion bonus from hotel programs not just Starwood. That meant it applied to Marriott Rewards travel packages. They’re running more conversion bonuses, selling miles cheaper than ever, all as revenue growth for the AAdvantage program was reported to be materially below projections. (Gee I wonder why.)
Now they’re back with a Starwood conversion bonus running September 1 through October 15.
Hyatt Taking a Full Month to Deliver The Most Important New Top Tier Benefit
There’s been much electronic ink spilled on Hyatt’s changes to its program that went into effect March 1. Here are the full details.
Perhaps the single most positive benefit for those who are still able to earn top tier elite status now that it requires 60 nights is ‘My Hyatt Concierge’.
London Heathrow Being Auctioned Off, You Can Own a Baggage Carousel OR EVERYTHING
London Heathrow’s terminal 1 originally opened in 1968 and a ceremony for the terminal was held in April 1969 with christening by Queen Elizabeth II. It was opened as the largest short haul terminal in Western Europe.
Now the whole thing is up for auction. And I do mean everything.
80 Year Old Million Miler Injured On United Flight, Dumped at Hospital Without Letting Family Know
United employees do enough to harm passengers without holding them responsible for the actions of other passengers.
I’m not sure they ought to be held legally liable here, although I’d like to think they’d care enough to ensure not just that an 80 year old woman receives care but that her family is notified where she is as well.
Here’s What’s Wrong With the American Airlines Flight Attendants Union
The dynamics in the union are such that they have to project ‘strength’ at all costs. They’re locked in a game where to maintain power internally they have to saber rattle, no matter the issue. But even if they got everything they asked for it wouldn’t be sustainable because the company would be no better off because its customers would be no better treated.
