Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, passed away at age 99. His Royal Highness, husband to Elizabeth II, was a discerning connoisseur of air travel:
When speaking to the Royal Aircraft Association back in 2002, Prince Philip commented on the British royal family’s air travel conditions.
“If you travel as much as we do, you appreciate the improvements in aircraft design of less noise and more comfort,” he said, “provided you don’t travel in something called economy class, which sounds ghastly.”
Proving, once again, that there’s an aviation angle to everything.
Oh dear God. Talk about trying to make your blog relevant!
And in other news, we believe the deceased singer Michael Jackson used to like flying.
Oh well, what are you going to say? For his class the 19th century ways of privilege extended well into the 20th. Anyway it reminds me a little of an account I read where Bette Davis was visiting friends in Connecticut. Thanks to their kids she ended up in a McDonald’s drive through. Surreal and not an experience she appreciated. Personally I just tell people I’m taking Ballast Class and let it go at that.

It is unfortunate that Prince Philip and Her Majesty The Queen never had the bucket-list opportunity to travel to in luxury on Spirit Airlines after splurging on Spirit’s “Big Front Seat” option. I am confident a Spirit Airlines trip from Cleveland (CLE) or Detroit (DTW) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) for Spring Break would have been memorable.
I dare say he wasn’t speaking from either experience or knowledge, just like so many on the internet.
As spouse of the head of state, it would be strange to travel in economy – I don’t see that happening in the USA.
Hey Cynical J. Why not just move along rather than posting your dislike for this blog. Obviously you have too much time on your hands.
Re the Royal Family in general. Why do the Brits put up with them. I guess the tourist revenue they bring in makes up for their snobbery and elitism. Personally I send them to Australia on a one way coach ticket.
