News and notes from around the interweb:
- United is launching once-weekly New Orleans-Cancun flights. I always find these routes strange and fascinating, there’s usually a backstory to them that’s not always immediately obvious.
- New mobile payment app that lets you send $3750 by credit card without fees.
- Air Canada has a promo code for 15% off to Asia
- British Airways is gutting its small business program, too.
The winner, as with the Avios changes, will be the rarely-spotted individual who flies exclusively in Club World and First on fully flexible tickets during the week but who loves nothing more than jumping into a World Traveller seat when he travels for leisure.
- What’s the most improved vacation opportunity for those spending US dollars? Argentina is a great bargain, especially when you exchange cash at the street rather than the official price. Berlin is a good value for Europe. Mexico is a bargain overall.
What’s surprising to me about the United MSY-CUN route is that Southwest hasn’t already done it. Southwest flies direct to 22 destinations from New Orleans, but they don’t fly anywhere in the Caribbean. I wish they would. Those of us interested in award bookings on that route would much rather use (a much smaller number of) Rapid Rewards points.
I would add that New Orleans, pre-Katrina, was a significant gateway to Latin America. At one point, TACA was even headquartered there. Thrice-weekly direct flights to Guatemala City meant that LSU got lots of Guatemalan students, including a couple that I knew well when I was there. As someone who has traveled to GUA five times in the last six years, I dearly wish those flights would come back.
Just saw your video with mommypoints at the Maldives… Got me thinking, what other hotels/cities are regular yearly, or regularly repeated trips for u? Would be an interesting post!
How does the 1099-K work on your taxes if you’re sending money to yourself?
@frank i don’t repeat too many places so regularly, that’s what makes maldives special for me
Given that UA flew a route out of EWR to grease the Port Authority chairman, I wouldn’t be surprised if the MSY-CUN route had a similar motivation.
