More Detail on What Air Canada Buying Aeroplan Would Look Like for Members

This morning I wrote that Air Canada made an offer to buy Aeroplan at a $2.25 billion valuation.

Aeroplan was spun off from Air Canada 13 years ago. It’s a separate, independent business that’s part of Aimia, a loyalty company which several other interests as well. Air Canada announced last year that they were going to start their own program and no longer work with Aeroplan.

Air Canada Proposes Buying Back Aeroplan, Instead of Competing Starting in 2020

This would allow Air Canada to start with all of Aeroplan’s members, instead of starting from scratch. It would take the pressure off of Air Canada to offer as rich a value proposition to members in order to compete with Aeroplan.

There’s a certain irony to spinning off the program, realizing income, driving down the value of that program and then acquiring it on the cheap.

Aeroplan Will Introduce Airline Transfer Partners and Only Devalue on 5% of Routes

Aeroplan is an independent separately traded company. Air Canada spun it off to raise cash and at the time locked in a 15 year agreement for an exclusive partnership. Aeroplan expected to renew this deal on less favorable terms, and planned to squeeze customers as a result.

But Air Canada is launching a new frequent flyer program in 2020 instead, leaving Aeroplan in a pickle.

Hurry: Book Lufthansa First Class Awards West Coast – Europe with Partner Miles

On Sunday I wrote that Lufthansa first class awards had become bookable using partner miles. That’s significant because normally Lufthansa only makes first class award space available in advance to its own Miles & More members. Star Alliance partner frequent flyer programs can generally only book that space within 2 weeks of departure.

Now this has spread to San Francisco – Munich.
