American Airlines is putting an additional row of first class into its Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft. They’re about the start work on the prototype A319. They expect to retrofit the first group of planes in the fall – the ones due for heavy maintenance checks – and then will proceed with the ones that only need cabin interior work.

Fire On Takeoff: United A319 Evacuated In Houston As Flames Erupt From Engine

At approximately 8:35 a.m. local time on Sunday, February 2, 2025, United Airlines Flight 1382 aborted its takeoff roll at Houston Bush Intercontinental airport. The Airbus A319, which was headed to New york LaGuardia, faced failure of the plane’s right engine. The crew rejected takeoff at high speed, slowed, and came to a stop on runway 15R.

American Airlines Expects To Add First Class Seats To Airbus A319 Fleet

As President Robert Isom explained it to flight attendants in an internal meeting this week, American Airlines would like to modify Airbus A319s and add more first class seats. Just 8 seats up front isn’t enough to sell on many of the routes where the aircraft gets deployed. He’d also like to add bigger overhead bins. A decision point may come next year.

American Airlines Has No Interest in 100 Seat Aircraft, Plans to Buy More Used A319s Instead

The Airbus A220 has been a popular aircraft. Delta was able to buy a large number of them cheap before Airbus took over sales of the program from Bombardier. It has a low cost of operations and can fly surprisingly long distances. The wide fuselage makes it a passenger favorite for comfort because each seat gets extra width.

American Airlines doesn’t have an interest in the A220. Instead, American plans to pick up more Airbus A319s on the used market super cheap – a cost driven down, in part, by the growing popularity of the A220.
