American Airlines purchased a stake in China Southern. The Chinese carrier will be leaving SkyTeam this year.
Several months ago they announced that frequent flyer benefits would be coming. Travel on China Southern now earns American AAdvantage redeemable miles (but elite qualifying miles only in American Airlines codeshares) and AAdvantage miles can be used for award travel on China Southern.

With China Southern leaving the SkyTeam alliance next year American Airlines — which owns a $200 million stake in the Chinese carrier — will be expanding its codesharing relationship next year. Along with that will come reciprocal mileage-earning and redemption and reciprocal lounge access.
Ultimately this will be a huge net add for AAdvantage members looking to travel to Asia, unless dominoes fall further and eventually push Cathay Pacific out of oneworld. That would not be a worthwhile tradeoff.

China Southern has become a stepchild within the SkyTeam alliance, with Delta taking an equity stake in China Eastern and China Eastern taking an equity stake in Air France. Moreover with Delta’s Korean Air joint venture, China Southern Guangzhou connections become less important still.
American Airlines took an equity stake in China Southern (natch) but their codesharing relationship was limited by SkyTeam rules.

The biggest takeaways are the growth of Chinese carriers and the declining importance in Southeast Asia of national carriers relative to low cost carriers which are overtaking them, especially on short haul and domestic routes.

There are great deals on Air China, China Southern, Xiamen, Delta, and Japan Airlines to Beijing and Chengdu and a bit more money to Hong Kong. Fares are available out of Vancouver, Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco.
Power Brick Catches Fire in Overhead Bin, Passengers Evacuated

There’s incredible video of a fire in the overhead bin of today’s China Southern flight CZ3539 from Guangzhou to Shanghai. A power bank in someone’s carry on caught fire prior to departure and passengers had to be evacuated from the plane.
A flight attendant and passenger tried to put out the fire with bottles of water and also juice, and then fire and security departments assisted in extinguishing it.
