JetBlue Founder’s Advice to Himself and How United, Delta, and American Fleets are Changing
A roundup of the most important stories of the day. I keep you up to date on the most interesting writings I find on other sites – the latest news and tips.
Free Inflight Internet is Coming, And It’s Going to Spread to Most Airlines
In 2012 I wrote that once bandwidth increases substantially for inflight internet, it would eventually become free (included in ticket price). I predicted that would happen within 10 years.
Now JetBlue offers it for free. Aer Lingus announced they’ll be offering it for free. Southwest, Delta, and Alaska offer free messaging. And the trend is going to spread because it is a profit maximizing strategy once bandwidth no longer needs to be rationed.
Competition Works: Starting Thursday Citibank Improves Points Transfer Ratio to JetBlue
Last month Chase added JetBlue as a transfer partner. Chase transfers are one-to-one.
Responding to this competition Citi is introducing improved transfer ratios to JetBlue effective September 13.
United Becomes First Big US Airline to Increase Checked Bag Fees
At the beginning of the week JetBlue increased checked bag fees to $30 for first bag. At the time I suggested that the larger US airlines were certainly looking at it, but that a major airline especially Delta needed to do it before we could say everyone would.
United turns out to be the large US airline to go first.
JetBlue Increase the Price of First Checked Bag to $30, Will Other Airlines Match?
Over the last year JetBlue has made several moves to squeeze more revenue from customers. The airline has been eliminating its product advantages over competitors, and diminishing its customer-friendly approach. They still offer more legroom and their inflight internet generally works, but the legroom advantage is less than it used to be and the airline no longer offers a free checked bag to everyone.
Now JetBlue has made a move that its domestic rivals hadn’t yet — increasing the cost of a first checked bag to $30. And what everyone wants to know is, will other airlines match?
Chase Adds New Airline Transfer Partner, Its 3rd US Airline: JetBlue
Yesterday I discovered that Korean Air was still listed as a Chase transfer partner one day after it was supposed to be removed.
So I went to check again this morning to see whether Korean Air was still there. It’s not. But a new transfer partner appeared: JetBlue TrueBlue.
Here’s How Much Airlines Made Off Their Frequent Flyer Programs So Far This Year
Frequent flyer programs create tremendous value for airlines. They’re highly profitable, and have been for years. When United filed for bankruptcy it was said to have to continue flying to support the underlying credit card business. The airline’s first call after seeing the judge each time was to Jamie Dimon.
The issuer of the United co-brand credit card provided debtor-in-possession financing to United, and co-led bankruptcy exit financing. As with other airlines, United received hundreds of millions of dollars in loans backed by future mileage sales to provide liquidity during the financial crisis.
American Express Adding New Airline Points Transfer Partner: Aer Lingus
American Express tells me that their Membership Rewards program will be adding Aer Lingus as a 1:1 points transfer “at the end of this month.”
Here’s what that will mean for your redemptions
Airline Practices Customer Service Time Travel
JetBlue has been in the news for making a jilted bridesmaid whole after she bailed on the wedding (for which she had already invested a lot).
Some customers have taken to social media with unreasonable – nae, impossible – requests which underscore some things just aren’t an airline’s fault
