Mar 15 2021

Norwegian ceased its transatlantic business and is trying to stay afloat as an intra-European carrier. But the founder of Norwegian thinks his ultra low cost long haul business model – that has never worked before – is suddenly ripe for success. And he’s trying again with Norse Atlantic Airways.

OSM Aviation, which provided staff outsourcing to Norwegian, is 53% owner of the new venture. Expect low cost labor flying 9 to 12 ex-Norwegian Boeing 787s and even planning to offer connections with Norwegian.

Honeymoon Couple Gets Stuck With $4000 in Vouchers After Norwegian Drops Transatlantic Flying

I am an advocate of following the rules of a program that you’ve agreed to, and I counsel against selling points and miles because the risks involved generally aren’t worth it (cancelled tickets, shut down accounts, ban from the airline).

In the case of a carrier that shut down its transatlantic operation, that a customer doesn’t intend to fly again, I’m not so sure that taking a haircut on the value of these points to get something out of them isn’t the worst strategy. What do you think?

Norwegian Drops All Transatlantic Flights, Liquidates Long Haul Subsidiaries

Jan 14 2021

Norwegian helped drive low cost transatlantic travel with its Boeing 787s, much to the chagrin of legacy carriers. British Airways even considered buying the airline in order to quash it as a competitor. Now it will focus on domestic and regional flying with its narrowbody aircraft.

None of this is surprising but it’s disappointing for consumers who benefited from the competition, whether they flew Norwegian or not.

Oct 10 2020

Norwegian Air, the low cost carrier, was struggling before the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s already been bailed out by the government, but that’s not enough. Now they’re in talks with the government over nationalization.

So now, with global travel depressed, seems like the perfect time to start another Norwegian airline, of course!

Oct 01 2020

They’re reportedly in talks with the government of Norway over nationalization, since the earlier bailout the carrier received hasn’t been enough to keep them afloat while a government spokesperson confirms that the carrier is deemed to be “very important” although they’d anticipate government-as-shareholder would be a temporary arrangement.

Airlines All Over The World Are Having Success At One Thing – Getting Governments To Give Them Money

While there’s no doubt that airlines are struggling in the face of a sudden evaporation of demand for their product, what’s especially striking about this moment is the success airlines are having at the political game given that public health concerns might take budgetary priority – such as prioritizing funds for hospital beds, protective equipment, ventilators (which don’t appear to do much good) but just as importantly for treatments and ultimately vaccine research.

Norwegian Air Declares Four Subsidiaries Bankrupt

Apr 20 2020

Norwegian’s failure was one of 10 things I told you to expect from the coronavirus crisis. They’re now putting four subsidiaries which employ crew into bankruptcy and terminating other staffing agreements. They’re blaming the choice on which companies to put into bankruptcy on lack of subsidies by the governments of Sweden and Denmark.

Norwegian Air Could Run Out Of Cash In Weeks

plane on runway
Mar 13 2020

Norwegian Air says they may run out of cash in a matter of weeks. Their long haul business is between several European countries and the U.S., but Europeans largely cannot travel to the U.S. for the next month. Bookings are down anyway in the current environment, and this was a troubled airline to begin with.
