United’s CEO Says His Airline Is Unreliable Because Of Climate Change [Roundup]

News and notes from around the interweb:

  • Two weeks ago United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby was blaming Canada for his airline’s operational problems. Now he’s moved on to climate change.

He’s not wrong, though, that carbon offsets – how Delta gets to claim carbon neutrality – are more or less fraud as currently practiced.

  • Interesting.

  • $33 million for an absolute dog of a Sheraton do you want to own a 36-year old purpose-built Crowne Plaza reflagged as a Sheraton 12 years ago, where all they can say about recent upgrades is ballroom lights, lounge furniture, and renovation of 5 suites?

  • What happened when I flew on Britain’s rowdiest flight route

  • What happens in Vegas… hits social media. A fight erupted at the Encore at Wynn hotel this past weekend, with a passerby and security guard separating at least four women.

Both have already lost their shoes by this point of the fight, while their clothes are very disheveled, suggesting the clip starts mid-way through.

As the woman wearing the gold clothes appears to gain an advantage, a third woman wearing cream sweatpants comes barreling in, hitting a fourth woman – who appears to be a friend of the women wearing the gold outfit – in the face.

  • The Mexican government is getting closer to bringing defunct ex-Star Alliance and then oneworld national carrier Mexicana. It’s being promised to start in December (which doesn’t mean it will).

Puerto Vallarta (PVR) is expected to be one of the airports served.

It’s a virtual lock that the airline will be based at the President’s much beloved airport near Mexico City (NLU) which he has attached his political fortunes to. In fact, it is likely this whole airline exists only to jumpstart some sort of traffic at the airport.

  1. Gary?,

How come I got over twenty e-mails from VFTW today in about thirty minute time period? ( They ranged all the way from the 8th of July until today ).

  2. It should be clear that Scott Kirby will blame everyone except himself for the operational mess that is United at Newark this summer.
United has asked the FAA repeatedly to impose UA-specific groundstops for EWR because of ramp congestion and the inability to move planes around to the number of available international gates, blocking taxiways and gumming up UA’s entire afternoon and evening EWR operation.
They are regularly cancelling more of their own mainline flights at the beginning of the day than any other airline and are also increasing the amount of Republic cancellations at Newark.
They know they have overscheduled EWR this summer but are blaming everyone else.

  3. Again, why AA dodged a bullet and dropped Kirby. Whatever you think of Doug Parker, he was spot on with that move!

Why I don’t go to Vegas. . .white trash and MAGA land. Yuck!

  4. Did I miss the memo? I thought COVID was the reason for all of the airline problems. Then it was passengers were the reason for all of the airline problems. Now we’re switching to Climate Change being the source of all of the airline problems? OK….

And what problems are these exactly? CEOs underpaid? They’re losing money? Seats too big?

  5. The only thing that was able to take focus from the Climate Change fallacy, albeit briefly, was the Covid fraud and that seems to be ending, for the most part. The only ones trying to keep it alive are the fools wearing their face diapers at the grocery store.

  6. Really?!? How ingenious to blame delays on Climate Change. But, then again, most of the problems of the world today are blamed on Climate Change, so why not flight delays and cancellations.

Or was Kirby just trying to be funny?

  7. @ Gary — United’s delays are caused by greed, which is the cause of climate change, so I suppose Kirby is correct.

  8. @James N
Knowing a “bum” like you would be on here spitting out disinformation about climate change and covid is not surprising. Of course no one in this country gets sick because you’re the “bum” genius and has to wear a mask.
