In the 1995 film Clueless, Kenny G is the archetype of the least cool thing a high school student could imagine.
Josh Lucas: In some parts of the universe, maybe not in Contempo Casuals, but in some parts, it’s considered cool to know what’s going on in the world.
Cher Horowitz: Thank you, Josh. I so need lessons from you on how to be cool. Tell me that part about Kenny G again?
Kenny G took Delta from Tampa to Los Angeles on yesterday morning’s flight 1558.
The famous saxophonist was sitting beside a woman “who was raising money for charity” and he got up in the aisle and played for donations. He “collected more than $2,000 for the [unnamed] charity.”
@tedgioia makes the point on twitter,
Here’s video of Delta’s inflight live entertainment:
It’s striking how many passengers appeared non-plussed, such as a woman who just keeps reading her book as he walks by.
Update: Reader Jack P. says funds were raised for Delta Relay for Life in support of the American Cancer Society.
Maybe they paid to get him to stop?
If he played for 5 minutes then I can tolerate it but much more than that and I’d start getting annoyed. What’s next Scrillex is on a plane and whips out his turntable and speakers “for charity.”
One mans enjoyment is another’s nuisance.
I would be “non-plussed” at best as well. It’s bad enough to sit there knowing the miles you are earning are worthless, but being held hostage in a confined space and strong-armed/guilted into donating to a charity operated by same airline that treats YOU badly would be too over the top for me …
I think it’s awesome!
I’m in for $5. Make it $100 if you stop!! $200….do we have a limit like for VDB?
Kenny G needs a new sweater
Don’t really see what the problem is. This happens all the time on the NYC subway, which air travel is increasingly coming to resemble.
JustSayNoToDelta’s comment above, hits the bullseye, my feelings exactly:
“I would be “non-plussed” at best as well. It’s bad enough to sit there knowing the miles you are earning are worthless, but being held hostage in a confined space and strong-armed/guilted into donating to a charity operated by same airline that treats YOU badly would be too over the top for me …”
Yea seriously. Kenny G or not I would not appreciate being trapped in a plane and being pressured to give to charity. It does sound more and more like the NYC subway as the other poster pointed out.
Who wants to be solicited for money on an airplane?
Sit down, Kenny.
Southpark to the rescue.
Hard hearted folks here.
How horrible. Someone asked me to give to the American Cancer Society on a plane!
Guess I’m in the minority here. I’d be thrilled to have Kenny G on my flight and hear him play. It’s not like he’s playing for the entire flight, prob 5-10 minutes. If you don’t want to donate, don’t. They aren’t going to beg.
Oh even better this was a fund raiser for ACS who pays their CEO John Seffrin over $1.4M/year. Thanks Kenny!
KennyG? He’s still around?? 😉
I would told the flight attendant that it was annoying and hurting ears and recorded my conversation with them. Then complained to the FAA. And raised asti know with the airlines.
Also I do not like anyone soliciting me for money. My wife and I give a lot for causes we believe in we do not need to be bothered by this when we are paying the airlines for a service.
Agree with Bill and Take-A-Break. Completely inappropriate.
Up next on Delta Inglight Studio – Sanfir and his pan flute.
Isn’t that kind of annoyance only supposed to happen in the basic economy class section?
my wife left me for a charity fundraiser, that bastard.
FWIW, I think his heart was in the right place, but it reminds me too much of what you have to deal with while riding a bus in Cancun.
For all those knocking Kenny G – he’s laughing all the way to the bank.
For those that were inconvenienced by a 5 minute performance during a 5 hour flight, well there are probably some empty seats on United and American.
Recently I was annoyed at a Starbucks when another customer was playing his iPod or whatever through an external speaker. Not only was the choice of music bothersome, but combined with the normal background music, it was particularly annoying. If you are looking for a video of it, with crying and police intervention, forget it. Unlike an airplane, I was able to leave.
Thank goodness for noise cancellation headphones 🙂
Oh sure but when I start strolling up and down the aisle at 30,000 feet with my ukulele suddenly it’s all “make him stop!” and “put some pants one!”. Hypocrites.
There is a certain amount of social pressure here that I don’t want to have deal with. I am not stingy or hardhearted and give to charities voluntarily, not because I am pressured into it.
