1000 Bonus American Miles for $200 Online Shopping Spend

The American AAdvantage online shopping portal is offering 1000 bonus miles for spending $200 or more, cumulatively on purchases (all of your purchases can add up to $200 – it doesn’t have to be for a single item), through August 25. No registration required.

In other words, make your online purchases by starting at the AAdvantage online mall and clicking on the retailers you’ll buy from at their site and you’ll pick up an extra 1000 miles on top of the miles you’d normally earn for doing so.

The AAdvantage portal is run by Cartera commerce. I interviewed their President earlier this year, and tried to shed some light on how these online shopping portals – which offer you a rebate for the shopping you’ll do anyway – work.

Meanwhile, the Hawaiian Airlines shopping portal is offering up to 2000 bonus miles for $500 spend (4 extra miles per dollar), with lesser bonuses at the $100 and $250 level. Since I’m not especially a fan of Hawaiian’s mileage program I won’t be earning that bonus.

  1. Seems you can buy Hyatt and American Airlines gift certificates at GiftCertificates.com and earn 2 AA miles per dollar if you have nothing else you need anyway.

  2. Curious about who sets the price for manufactured goods purchased through these shopping portals – the shopping portal or the manufacturer (whereby the shopping portal gets a fixed % cut) ?

  3. The HA shopping portal is a joke! I STILL haven’t received my HA miles for filing my taxes with their Emarket partner, Free Tax USA on APRIL 15 2014!! They owe me about 400 Hawaiian Miles from that. Then, like an idiot, I went thru their website AGAIN in July for a hotel booking in which they promised me 300 Hawaiian Miles, no luck on that one yet either! I’m at the point of un-installing their stupid toolbar, redeem the Miles I have in my account, AND NEVER USE THEM AGAIN! Why do these shopping portals rip off customers over such SMALL amounts of miles? Don’t they realize that customers CAN GO ELSEWHERE??

  4. Sounds good on paper, but never again. I bit on one of these, met the spend, and tried to chase down the miles but it was a black hole. Much easier ways on a time and cost basis to earn 1000 AA miles.

  5. Sorry, can’t buy gift cards to get the 1000 points:

    Returns, shipping, taxes, gift card purchases, and certain products are not eligible for bonus;

  6. Is that right, that gift card purchases won’t work? I was definitely planning on buying an super certificate from giftcertificates.com, but probably not worth doing without the bonus 5 miles/$…
