News and notes from around the interweb:
- Baltimore’s BWI airport is looking to build a hotel connected to the terminal
- Silvercar is offering a free rental day, up to $89, for new customers on a rental of 2 days or more with promo code LOUNGEBUDDY. The usual best new customer offer is $50 off a 2-day rental. This is stackable with a $25 reward for being referred by an existing member (the referrer also gets $50, this is my referral link but feel free to leave yours in the comments). Love me some Silvercar… (HT: Canadian Travel Hacking)
- Long Island’s Islip airport is courting super-cheap Europe service from WOW Air. (HT: Reid F.)
- United’s abandonment of New York JFK, and proposed slot swap with Delta, suggests that in the current regulatory environment additional airline mergers may not be possible but strengthening hubs via slot deals may be a path towards greater consolidation. (HT: Alan H.)
- Allegiant, which currently offers the only scheduled air service out of Mesa, Arizona, is threatening to pull out of the airport if it goes through with a plan to provide $1.3 million in subsidies to Elite Airways for San Diego and Salt Lake City service.
- Thai Airways downsizing by 24 more planes (~ 30%) by the end of 2016.
- Up to 7500 Aeroplan miles per Air Canada flights between Canada and Europe and between Vancouver and Osaka.
So let me get this straight. They think that Long Islanders will want to either fly to Iceland on an airline called “WOW” or connect there on the way to mainland Europe? So either there are lots of us looking to go to this subarctic nation voluntarily or we don’t realize that plenty of direct flights to mainland Europe are available from JFK, which is less than one hour away. Let me know how this business idea works out.

The headline about Long Island cheap Euro flights is a little misleading; implying that they’re actually in the future as opposed to the airport asking the carrier to consider flying from their airport.

@gary leff
“LOUNGEBUDDY” doesnt work
Teddy, Southwest flies to Long Island, making European connections there very feasible, especially for those looking for inexpensive fares. And travel to Iceland has doubled since 2010; lots of people (like me, next summer) are planning travel to the island nation. You may not be aware of this, but not everyone prefers long, direct flights—some people (especially when traveling coach) do prefer to break up their flights and spend a few hours relaxing in the Blue Lagoon.
Sign up for an account with my referral at https://www.silvercar.com/?referrer_code=SMOONEY1 and then when making a reservation use promo code LOUNGEBUDDY
You’ll get $89 off the two day rental, and then $25 via PayPal after your rental is complete. If you sign up with the same email you use for PayPal, the $25 is automatically deposited. No extra work required.
