A tourist in Jackson Hole, Wyoming stole a Pizza Hut delivery truck because he needed a ride to the airport.

21-year-old Quinn McElwain and his friends had gotten into an argument when McElwain, who had reportedly been drinking, decided to leave town. His friends later reported him missing; the police had already gotten a report of a Pizza Hut delivery vehicle being stolen from the hotel, and quickly figured out that the two were related — though at that point, McElwain had already made it safely to the airport and boarded a flight to Chicago.

The crack detectives figured out the scheme, and worked with their counterparts across jurisdictions to try to find him. However police were too late to catch him at his connection in Denver. Instead the game plane was to meet his gate on arrival at his destination in Chicago. But the cops went to the wrong gate and missed him.

Now in fairness, neither Uber nor Lyft are live in Jackson Hole.

According to the local Jackson Hole Daily, charges are unlikely to be filed.

In fact I’m not even sure car theft is a crime anymore, there have been a lot of changes in the law.

According to police, it’s not grand theft auto without an intent “to permanently deprive the owner of the vehicle” and the man only wanted to borrow the delivery truck without permission it seems. They’d be willing to charge misdemeanor ‘unauthorized use of a vehicle’ but they’re skeptical the prosecutor’s office would be willing to pay for extradition back to the state.

The good news in all of this is that Pizza Hut doesn’t owe the offender a refund, since their vehicle delivered him to the airport within half an hour.
