News and notes from around the interweb:
- The first female executive in the US airline industry has died at age 105, “She was named an assistant vice president by American’s board in 1946 and vice president in 1951.”
She recalled in an interview in 1997 that when she was finally given a few minutes to meet C. R. Smith, the president of American, he told her that although he had agreed to her promotion, he did not generally approve of women in executive positions.

- I had never seen this before: Bob Crandall gave a tribute to Herb Kelleher when the Southwest Airlines CEO retired.
He sounds like Liberace singing
Painful to listen too as he sings so flat
I’d welcome him back to American if he would replace the worst airline ceo in history Parker
I would even listen to him sing off key for hours if he would run American and bring it back to being a good company
What a classy guy Bob Crandall! He would would have never disrespected the retirees like Parker.
In the 1997-98 timeframe, I interviewed for a job with Southwest. That video of Crandall singing the tribute to Herb was playing on a loop in the lobby at Southwest’s headquarters. It was only later that I would learn the Herb and Crandall were buddies. I didn’t get the job, but things turned out OK. 🙂
