Free Points and New Places to Earn 5 Points Per Dollar

News and notes from around the interweb:

  • 100 free Aeroplan points for taking a survey great for extending the expiration of points.

  • As long as you have a Chase card whose points transfer to miles like Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Ink Business Preferred Credit Card then Chase Freedom’s quarterly 5x earning in rotating categories (register) is super valuable. You can transfer points from Freedom to one of the transferrable points cards and then to airline miles or hotel points.

For the first quarter of 2018 the card earns 5 points per dollar on the first $1500 spent with:

  • New IRS mileage reimbursement rate for 2018: 54.5 cents per mile.

  • ANA Mileage Club acknowledges the problems they’ve been having booking Etihad awards by suspending those awards, hopefully temporarily.

  • United President Scott Kirby talks about banking hubs. He doesn’t mention what happens in bad weather at banked hubs, when aircraft aren’t leaving their gates but some planes do arrive.

  • Delta and Virgin Atlantic’s bizarre joint Christmas video (HT: One Mile at a Time)

  1. We have been interested in the new Barclay Red World MC. My husband has the Arrival Plus and recently cancelled the old Red Aviator (the one that automatically converted from US Airways) and I have the Silver Aviator as upgrade from old US Air Red Aviator. He spoke with a customer service person in the credit card department at Barclay to find out if eligible for the 60,000 bonus miles for the new Red Aviators, and was told that if had any Barclay card within last 24 months, then not eligible. This seems to contradict what I’ve read in some of the blogs which have said that the “new Red”is a different product from the “old Red” and none mentioned the 24 month restriction of having any Barclay card in last 24 months. Will you clarify the requirements for the “new Red” Barclay card. Thanks.
