News and notes from around the interweb:
- “Hotel Secret Agents” Wanted. Ok, so it’s just secret shoppers. Sounds great, but Four Points by Sheraton’s Chief Beer Officer is still much cooler.
- Delta complains with some regularity that they lack a Japanese airline partner (American has JAL and United ANA) despite having beyond rights to fly passengers from there to countries other than the US. Apparently they’re offering to invest in bankrupt Skymark Airlines as part of that carrier’s restructuring. (Five years ago they made a similar play for JAL.)
- A report on a 2013 incident determined that a British Airways A319 to Oslo “was forced to make an emergency landing at Heathrow with one engine damaged and the other on fire after fatigued engineers worked on the wrong aircraft.” (HT: Alan H.)
- United is asking customer service agents to be nice. Perhaps, like Dalton, until it’s time “to not be nice.”
- KLM’s ‘inaugural’ 787 flight may not be the plane’s first flight, and a look at its award availability.
- Connaught Hotel has a hidden champagne room (HT: Alan H.) For avoidance of doubt though, there’s no sex in the champagne room.

Uh mystery shopping hotels is not exactly top secret – I’ve done hotel shops all over California – LA, SF, etc. There are tons of companies that need good shoppers to do this work (especially indian casinos!). Unfortunately it’s usually a lot of work, although when you’ve done as many shops as my wife and I have it’s really second nature (you just end up evaluating and thinking about service everywhere you go and during every meal you eat). It’s fun work but it’s still work. No free lunch.
