Mexico Flight Hijack Attempt: Passenger Claims Family Kidnapped, He’d Be Killed If They Landed In Tijuana

A passenger on a Volaris domestic flight Sunday morning tried to hijack the plane and have it take him to the United States. The 31-year-old man was traveling with his wife and two children. He attacked a flight attendant and attempted to force his way into the cockpit.

Volaris Flight 3041 was en route from El Bajío Airport in León to Tijuana. Shortly after departure, the man said,

  • He received death threats warning him not to travel to Tijuana
  • And that a family member had been kidnapped.

Both of those things seem possible in Mexico! Tijuana is regarded as a hotspot for organized crime and cartel violence. But low cost carrier Volaris has neither wifi nor inflight entertainment, so I wonder how did he receive the threats and new information about his family after departure?

After the man took action to take over the plane, crew restrained him and the pilot diverted to Guadalajara. The man was handed over to authorities on arrivals.

Here’s video of the incident:

Volaris CEO Enrique Beltranena offered,

Thanks to the bravery and commitment of our pilots and flight attendants, the situation was managed effectively, ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew on board.

All passengers, crew members, and the aircraft were reported safe, and the flight continued to Tijuana two hours after the diversion.

  1. RIP to that passenger. If the cartel doesn’t get him, the crooked police will. We never truly know when our ‘last flight’ will be, but safe to say, this guy is cooked. Roasted. Toasted. Cheers!

  2. And he is ignorant TIJ is the US once you cross the private bridge and customs to the San Diego side of the airport or maybe he didn’t want to pay the $15 for the private customs fee.

  3. I don’t see the lack of comms to be proof he didn’t get a message. Perhaps he got it while still on the ground but hadn’t looked at it yet. That being said, the cartels don’t like things like this, they’ll kill him.
