More and smaller airports are needed. Streamlined security, that doesn’t wait for nationwide universal rollout, is needed. We need runways and taxiways and air traffic capacity to increase throughput without stacking delays. Most of all, we need to avoid complacency that accepts the status quo as given.
Aviation blogger and New Hampshire state legislator Seth Miller (‘sbm12’ in frequent flyer forums) is suing in U.S. District Court in Nevada to affirm his right to publicly criticize Avelo Airlines over this service. He raised $6,000 from 70 people to fund billboards criticizing Avelo, but the airline got them taken down.

Obviously they should optimize their schedules – stop burning peak-hour slots on thin-regional routes and upgauge high yield routes. They should continue to lean into the co-location of their oneworld partners in terminal 8. They should consider growing at Newark (long-term, this month wouldn’t be the time to announce it).
But I actually think there are several additional things that American Airlines can do to compete effectively in New York.
United Airlines is experiencing a catering meltdown in San Francisco. The airline is transitioning from Gate Gourmet to LSG Sky Chefs and the changeover began Thursday. There have been widespread problems including severely reduced food and beverage services, inadequate onboard provisions, and confusion among crew and passengers about what to expect.
The tower controller mistakenly issued takeoff clearance to American Eagle flight AA4736. Communication was further complicated by a Spirit Airlines pilot inadvertently blocking transmissions. As American 4736 accelerated down the runway, tower controllers received an automated collision alert and attempted to retract the takeoff clearance.
Now Marriott Bonvoy even promises less to its members for what rooms they’ll get as an upgrade, based on a change to the program’s terms and conditions. Although honestly the rules change simply reflects what I’d understood to always be the case.
One woman woke up on a flight and discovered her hair had been braided and she had no idea who did it: ‘I need you to come forth immediately.’
