United Waiving Minimum Spend Requirements Towards Status for Some Members
Loyal reader Mark P. sends me this note: United extended my 1k status for 2015 due to my “long term commitment to United”. I flew over 126,000 miles, 48 segments, and [had] $7000 in [Premier Qualifying Dollars]. I also had over $25,000 spend on the United [credit card] to qualify for the waiver to get me to Platinum. United imposes a minimum spending requirement to achieve elite status. For 2014 spending towards 2015 status you had to spend at least $2500 for Silver, $5000 for Gold, $7500 for Platinum, and $10,000 for 1K status. For 2015 they increased the spending requirements by the same 20% as Delta. As before these requirements should only apply to members with US addresses (they’ve cracked down on address changes), and members who spend $25,000 or more on a co-brand…

Delta’s New Program Launched Today: So Far Award Redemption Changes Are Positive!
Delta devalued their award chart multiple times and then announced completely new award charts. With those changes came the hope that they’d finally get their act together with award availability. They announced finally allowing one-way awards at half the price of roundtrip. And they’ve improved the ability of their website to actually find available award seats. Delta’s new revenue-based earning program went into effect today. This is bad for most flyers, although there will be a subset who earn more. Along with the new program comes changes in award redemption. And I’m willing to give them benefit of the doubt, despite a history that makes that really really tough to do. US Airways Elites “Special Dividend” Now Appears to Gift a Full Year of Elite Status Instead of 90 Days
On December 22, US Airways eliminated their temporary elite status offer that allowed you to fly a lot in a short period of time to keep elite status. A couple of months ago I said that if I were running the program I would end it come December. I assumed that had to happen months before American and US Airways actually combine their frequent flyer programs because it would be really complicated to register folks for the US Airways promotion, give them 90 days to fly, and move Dividend Miles into AAdvantage during that 90 day period. They’d have to build whole new IT process just to accommodate these trial preferreds whose qualifying period includes time in both the US Airways Dividend Miles program and the American AAdvantage program. Starwood’s First Quarter Promotion Leaked Early!
Starwood has already pulled the details off of their website, since they apparently didn’t want to make their first promotion of 2015 public yet. But — hat tip to Mommy Points — between January 5 and April 15 you will earn: Double points on stays of 2 or more nights 1000 bonus points for every 5 five nights stayed during the promotion period, up to 4000 bonus points. Registration will be required, opening in the coming week. There will be non-participating properties, although ~ 90% of Starwood hotels will be eligible for the promotion. This promotion isn’t as generous as, though does stack with, Starwood’s offer of 500 bonus points per stay booked through the Starwood app (earn up to 3 times, through March 31).
