Delta Rolled Back Last Night’s Devaluation, Transatlantic Business Class Back to 70,000 Miles

delta plane
Dec 01 2017

Last night Delta began charging 86,000 miles each way for business class awards between the US and Europe on Delta’s own planes. What’s bizarre — aside from the 23% no notice increase — is that it meant Delta flights were more expensive (by 1000 miles) than flights on partners.

They’ve already rolled back this change.

Singapore’s Flight Attendant Training is Amazing But Rubs Me the Wrong Way

Nov 10 2017

While I was in Singapore for the unveiling of Singapore Airlines new cabin products I visited the carrier’s training facility.

I’ve had better crews on Singapore and some less good crews on Singapore but on average I find their service to the best in the industry — high level, precise, and mostly consistent. It doesn’t surprise that flight attendant training is the longest in the industry.

WOW: New York or Chicago to India or All Over Asia Less Than $400 Roundtrip

Aug 01 2017

For a decade it was unheard of to see roundtrip fares to Southeast Asia for under $600. I don’t even bother sharing fares to Europe unless they’re under $500… preferably under $400. There was a time these would be presumed to be mistake fares. Airlines would have claimed they were mistake fares. Now they’re just a good fare sale, the kind of thing that pops up now and again if you’re watching.

You Don’t Need to Speak Anything But English When You Travel the World

Jun 30 2017

My language skills are quite poor. I was never very good at Hebrew, though I studied it sat in class clueless over it for several years. I was never very good at Spanish, though I took it in school for six years. I was always better at reading it than speaking it, and once someone got into a conversational pace I was done for.

The good news is you can travel effectively almost anywhere in the world without speaking anything other than English (go ahead – flame me!).

Are Two Of My Strongly-Held Travel Beliefs Totally Wrong?

Jan 12 2017

I avoid Cancun. My mental model is spring break and disappointing resorts. You can use it as a jumping off point to explore the Yucatan but I’d rather fly into Merida for that. It’s super close since I live in Texas and Southwest offers daily non-stops for the 2.5 hour flight (United has seasonal weekend non-stops as well) so if only I could find a wonderful escape there…

I avoid all-inclusives. I don’t drink a lot and when I do drink I have strong preferences for what I’m drinking. Do I really want to be locked into staying on property since eating there comes at no marginal cost? Even though each generally has at least one ‘nice’ restaurant the food seems to most often disappoint.

Inside the New Kuwait Airways Boeing 777-300ER: World’s Cheapest Premium Long Haul Airline Gets Brand New Product!

Dec 26 2016

Kuwait Airways no longer flies between New York JFK and London because it would have had to carry Israeli passport holders to do so under US law, while the government of Kuwait does not recognize the state of Israel.

But they do fly non-stop between New York and Kuwait City. And they offer one of the least expensive premium products in the world. Historically that premium product has been awful (and they’re a dry airline to boot) but it’s cheap. For instance, here’s Cairo – New York JFK in business class for $592.
