smurfs walking around cake
Feb 05 2018

Every Valentine’s Day shopping portal offers get pretty big for Valentine’s-related gifts like flowers. It’s been true almost forever.

The usual ‘big boost’ is earning 30 miles per dollar, which is a pretty good rebate for miles often worth about 1.5 cents apiece (a 45% rebate on the base price of flowers, but not really that big when you factor shipping which doesn’t earn miles).

first class seats
Jan 30 2018

Non-stop business class to and from Australia is one of the toughest frequent flyer awards in the world. Qantas has long been stingy with this space in particular.

However they’re planning to fly a Boeing 787 Brisbane – Los Angeles with 747 service a few days a week. And on the days where a 747 operates in September and through mid-October there’s generally two business class award seats available.

You Can Now Redeem American Miles for Virgin America Flights – Great Availability

The economics of frequent flyer program spinoff

united
Jun 30 2005

The cover story of the July, 2005 Inside Flyer is on airlines spinning off their frequent flyer programs in public offerings. David Rowell thinks United could be worth $15 billion. Randy Petersen says “greater than $2.5 billion.” According to the piece, airlines sell $3 billion worth of miles annually. United’s spinoff of Mileage Plus into a wholely-owned subsidiary in 2002 was a $1.4 billion transaction. Mileage is clearly a big business: In 2003, ULS accounted for 5 percent of UAL’s 2003 revenues. In 2004, United recognized more than $400 million in revenues related to ULS, which would not reflect the entire business revenue of ULS for that year. In 2000, revenue for third-party mileage sales reached $220 million during the first six months alone. But American AAdvantage is clearly the king of frequent flyer programs,…

Holiday Shopping Bonus Miles

american airlines
Nov 17 2004

The online shopping portals are rolling out the mileage offers. United is offering 1000 bonus miles for spending $50 and 2500 bonus miles for spending $100 at one of five select merchants, on top of the regular miles earned. The bonus can be earned three times on purchases made through December 31. Send $100 in flowers via FTD, for example, and earn 4500 miles – for a nice 45 miles per dollar spent. That’s a nice improvement over the otherwise-excellent 30 miles per dollar that’s available the rest of the year Through December 31st, Delta is offering 150 bonus miles when you spend $100 and 500 bonus miles when you spend $250 in addition to regular miles earned with selected merchants at their online mile. If you earn $150 with two or more merchants you’ll…
