Earning American Airlines Lifetime Elite Status Via Credit Card Spend

Without people traveling, and with fewer immediate opportunities to spend accumulated miles, the airline has a challenge with its co-brand credit cards. They earn around $3 billion a year in revenue through their partnerships with Citibank and Barclays, but spending is going to fall both because of less travel and also because of the economy in recession.

The airline has an interesting approach to this, encouraging spend on their cards between May 1 and December 31, 2020. Spending on their Citibank and Barclays cards will earn credit towards lifetime elite status. Here are answers to questions not available in American’s original release.

Should Flight Attendants Be Allowed To Wear Face Shields? American Airlines Says No.

Flight attendants and even passengers are now expected to wear face masks when flying. But what about face shields? Some airlines are outfitting their cabin crew in full personal protective equipment. That provides a consistent look for the airline.

What about a flight attendant taking it upon themselves to wear a face shield, when that’s not something the airline allows? Is it alright during the pandemic, or something the airline should be able to ban?

American Airlines Decommissions Old Award Search Tool & Calendar

A year and a half ago American Airlines launched a new award search tool clearly geared towards dynamic pricing of redemptions.

While many readers preferred the old award calendar, which lets you show availability by award type (special, saver, standard) and not just the single lowest price on a given day for each cabin, it was clear that the airline was investing only in the new tool moving forward.

Which U.S. Airlines Are Most Likely To Wind Up In Bankruptcy?

According to financial markets, the major U.S. airline most likely to wind up in bankruptcy is American, followed by United.

At this point the big airlines talk about how much cash they have to make it through this year. But that’s not the issue. After $58 billion in subsidies allocated to commercial airlines, airlines will make it through 2020. The question is what happens in 2021.

American Airlines Plans New Shortest Flight In The Country: Aspen to Vail

Airlines receiving the first tranche of government bailout money are required to continue serving nearly all of the cities they flew to prior to the pandemic. In exchange for billions of dollars to fund payroll, the government required that the nation’s air transport system remain intact.

Despite some exemptions from the Department of Transportation, airlines are getting creating launching new short flights to efficiently meet these obligations at the lowest possible cost. And reportedly that means a new, shortest domestic route from American Airlines.

In The Middle Of A Pandemic, American Airlines Changes Terminals In San Francisco

On Tuesday American Airlines moved operations in San Francisco to the Harvey Milk Terminal, B side of terminal 1. This puts all of American Airlines in one terminal at the airport, instead of having the old US Airways gates a long walk away.

The new ticket counter location is between doors 3 and 4 of the terminal. Their gates are B22 – B27, which despite the move doesn’t give them room for growth. The opening date for the new Admirals Club, across from gate B13, hasn’t yet been announced.
