United Eliminating Award Charts and Close-in Booking Fees

Now United is following Delta, eliminating award charts. Prices won’t go higher for travel, though, until November 15 and members may see lower prices today.

United is also eliminating close-in booking fees that range $25 – $75 for some members based on elite status for any award travel November 15, 2019 onward.

I know how I’m betting this turns out, based on nearly 20 years watching and studying this space. I’d love, however, to be wrong.

Why Don’t Airlines Make Award Seats Available on Empty Flights?

Some airlines make awards available when they load their schedules, which varies between roughly ten to twelve months prior to flight. They might add seats right when schedules load, or they might wait a few days or weeks.

Other airlines will wait until travel approaches. Although in general I find the best time to be searching for award space is about 6 months to departure. And one of the toughest times is two months out — seats made available in advance may be gone, and last minute award space hasn’t opened up yet.

Singapore Airlines Devalues Their Star Alliance Award Chart Effective April 19

The KrisFlyer program raised Singapore Airlines award prices again at the beginning of 2019 with about three weeks’ notice. Again they created the window where Star Alliance awards could be cheaper (albeit with fuel surcharges) and again offering a window of savings to throw away a partner flight segment at the end of a one way award booking.

That’s a pretty good indication that things wouldn’t last — that the Star Alliance award chart would be devalued too.

United Eviscerates its Award Chart

I’m pleasantly ensconced in the Diplomatic Suite at the Intercontinental Bangkok, but this news is important enough to say some things about before I head out to dinner. United has announced changes to its frequent flyer program, which are pretty much all bad. They begin by announcing new “Domestic Short Haul Saver Awards” — these are short flights that require 15,000 miles in coach instead of 25,000 miles. United has actually been offering these for some time now, and the announcement is that the benefit is being reduced not introduced. Previously the reduced mileage was applicable to flights of 750 miles or less. Now it applies only to flights of 700 miles or less. What difference does 50 miles make? Just ask New Yorkers. LaGuardia-Chicago is 733 miles. Newark-Chicago is 719 miles. Since the awards…
