If you have an Iberia Avios account that has been open 90 days and has earned at least 1 point, you can transfer British Airways Avios over to Iberia Avios.
Or you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points directly to Iberia.
Iberia has lower-priced transatlantic awards than British Airways does — and they don’t add the level of exorbitant fuel surcharges onto the price of awards as long as you’re flying Iberia metal.
- Iberia Business Class
What’s more, via UK blogger Head for Points, they’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Iberia Plus program with a 25% off sale:
- 25% all redemptions in all classes of service
- Book by April 11
- Fly non-peak dates March 27 through June 15, or October 1 through December 15
Normally Madrid – Boston, New York, or Chicago is just 34,000 points each way. This discount makes those flights just 25,500 each way.
Make sure to check award availability before transferring points, while Iberia does offer generous award space for 2 passengers between the US and Madrid that’s often only in the month following schedule open and pickings won’t be super generous.
The offer is available for travel on Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum and Head for Points suggest that it’s only open to existing Iberia Plus members. It’s always good to have an open Iberia Plus account so that when you need it it’s 90 days old or more allowing you to transfer points between Iberia and British Airways at will.
Does anyone know what Iberia’s “non-exorbitant” level of fees/taxes would be on a USA-Madrid business class roundtrip?
I’ve never purchased an award ticket from Iberia-Avios, but I recall pricing a few, and there were still some substantial fees (just not the “are you kidding me” level of BA Avios).
Is there any way to earn points on Iberia without flying? Hotel stays, online shopping, etc? I opened an Iberia account several months ago based on advice received here in this forum, but haven’t earned any points flying with them. We’ve got several hundred thousand BA miles in our household acct and a BA companion pass that I’ve been shopping for flights to spend it on but the flight taxes and fees are between $2200 to $4000 for two biz class tix. I’m at the point that I’m thinking the companion pass isn’t really worth earning, that 40k in spend would likely be better spent elsewhere on my Sapphire Reserve or Amex?
@iahphx: ~$200
Thanks, Matt. Seems like a good deal, if you value their biz class product and can find seats.
