American Finally Lets You See How Many Qualifying Miles You Earn for Each Flight

One of the more annoying things about American AAdvantage for elite frequent flyers has been that they show you an elite qualifying miles total for the year but have not shown you any kind of breakdown at all.

When you took a flight and it posted to your account you would see the redeemable miles earned for that flight, but not the elite qualifying miles. So you had no idea if they were posting correctly or not. In fact, for a time earlier this year they weren’t.

American’s 1967 Massimo Vignelli-designed Livery Was Updated Before AAdvantage Updated Tracking of Qualifying Miles in Member Accounts

When I spoke to American about their planned change to revenue-based earning starting August 1 and minimum spending requirements for status beginning next year I asked about this and was told they’d be implementing the ability to see qualifying miles by flight segment. A huge advance, although shocking they hadn’t ever done this for members before.

As of today that feature is now live.

American has added Ticket Number as well as Qualifying Miles and Segments to member account summaries. Presumably we will see Qualifying Dollars next year as well.

Interestingly qualifying miles from the Barclaycard AAdvantage Aviator Silver card do not show up under ‘qualifying miles’ (e.g. each entry showing 5000 miles and 0 segments). So perhaps this new feature offers the breakout only for qualifying miles from flights.

I spoke a a conference about six weeks ago where the event organizers purchased my ticket directly. Since first class (on a regional jet) was only $75 more in one direction they paid for first. You’ll see how I received double the qualifying miles for that flight than the other where they purchased coach (and I was upgraded).

It’s genuinely shocking that this basic information for members wasn’t available until now. But it’s great for members that they’ve added it.

  1. Elite qualifying miles from Barclay don’t count towards million miler status. Could that be the reason?

Also are there any elite qualifying miles from credit cards that due count for million miler status?

  2. It looks like this feature has been removed? Or is it hidden. Can you be more specific about where to view this info?
