American Airlines returns to Sydney with a flight December 17. The Los Angeles – Sydney service, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER, will become bookable this Sunday.
So if you want to be on the inaugural, get your trigger finger ready Sunday morning. I don’t expect much saver award space, but I anticipate it will be popular with folks both buying tickets and also spending for ‘AAnytime’ extra mileage level awards as well.

American flew Dallas – Honolulu – Sydney between February 1990 and February 1992 with a DC-10-30.
American also serviced Australia in the early 1970s with a Boeing 707. That service began August 1, 1970, and ended in March 1974 when American swapped their route authorities with Pan Am for additional Caribbean operations.
The expanded joint venture between American and Qantas could even bring us a future Los Angeles – Auckland service.
An American Airlines 787 would be the perfect launch aircraft for an Auckland route – smaller and more economical than what they’re flying to Sydney and what Qantas used to have on LA-Auckland. It’s a great ride in business class but could be especially tight in coach. (Although the 777-300ER is as well, with 10-across seating in back.)
I hope it’s easier to use point for business class….
I checked this morning at 7, the seats weren’t out, so i went back to sleep. Then when i woke up 4 hours later, i couldn’t find any saver seats. Gary do you think there will be any saver seats release in the near future?
@Michael saver seats in premium cabins definitely didn’t exist for the inaugural when the flight loaded. Doubt the inaugural will see saver space, though Expertflyer can set alerts for it.
They do have direct flights to Sydney. Business Class is 140K one way.
