There’s another change to American AAdvantage (in addition to Next Flight Guarantee for ConciergeKey members and rumored reduction in confirmed upgrade availability) that’s been shared by JonNYC on Twitter but not yet announced by American: elite companions will have the same status as the elite member for airport upgrade and standby lists starting January 1.

American is doing an update to its booking classes in order to accommodate the sale of their new international premium economy product (which needs its own classes).
Changing booking classes does not in itself mean that confirmed upgrade availability has to change, but it also is an opportunity to start fresh with how the booking class is being managed.

Starting in January if a ConciergeKey member’s flight is cancelled or delayed more than 3 hours, they (and a companion) are entitled to travel on the next flight in coach even if it is sold out. American will bump another customer to make this happen.

The US Department of Transportation requires airlines to offer consumers either 24 hour holds or 24 hour refunds for tickets they sell which are purchased at least a week in advance of travel.
United and Delta have offered 24 hour refunds even day of travel, not limiting the “courtesy cancel” benefit to reservations that are at least 7 days prior to departure.
United e-ticket confirmations now include a 7 day requirement describing the benefit, while United’s website does not.
