New All-Time Low: Nearly 4 Out Of 5 Hotel Rooms Are Empty
New hotel occupancy and room rate data shows that things got even worse for hotels last week than they were the week before when hotels hit what was then their lowest occupancy rate – ever.
It seemed like things couldn’t get any worse, and then last week happened.
Marriott Extends Elite Status, Takes Additional Measures
Marriott is extending current elite status through February 2022. And while they had already paused expiration of points through August they have extended that out to February 2021.
Miami Hotel Is Closed – Refuses To Return $2.3 Million From A School Trip
A New York City private school though hasn’t been so lucky and is now locked in a battle with Miami Beach’s Eden Roc hotel over a $2.3 million deposit for an April trip. Even though the hotel is closed, they won’t refund the deposit and are demanding an additional $1.2 million.
In my experience so far with group bookings hotels are being much more hard-nosed than with individual reservations. They have money and they do not want to give any back.
Hotel Comes Under Fire For Helping Wealthy Guests Quarantine From Coronavirus
While other hotels are closing, with no transient business, Swiss luxury hotel brand Le Bijou is setting up “quarantine apartments” based on what they’re learning about guests needs – in-room meals and COVID-19 testing, a private gym, access to medical care.
Le Bijou’s CEO says he noticed a drop off in three night bookings, but green shoots in the form of 14-day stays. He learned these were guests quarantining from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. And he realized there was an opportunity to stay in business by meeting guest needs. Some people are appalled.
Hyatt Extending Elite Status, Free Nights And Upgrades Through Next Year
Hyatt has already extended reservations flexibility through June 30, including refunds for prepaid hotel reservations for those who need or want to cancel.
They’ve also now worked through how to handle elite status, upgrade certificates, and free night awards. And they’re also announcing a further pause to expiration of points.
U.S. Hotels Hit Their Lowest Weekly Occupancy – Ever
More than 75% of hotel rooms in the U.S. were empty last week. And things were even worse in the top 25 hotel markets: 19.6% occupancy, and revenue per available room down nearly 86%.
Hyatt Extends Flexible Booking Policy Through June 30
Hyatt has extended their coronavirus travel waivers so that prepaid bookings remain refundable through June 30. This matches a move already made by Hilton and Marriott.
There are, however, no new World Of Hyatt updates. So points are still set to expire again starting in June, elite status has only been extended for Asia Pacific members (who are not at this point in the epicenter of virus spread), and free night certificates have not been extended at all and continue to expire (although you should be able to convert expired certificates into points).
Marriott Extends Flexible Cancellation To June 30
Marriott has updated its coronavirus policy, granting flexibility on cancellations through June 30th as well, though with no new information on what to expect from the Bonvoy program.
There’s a bunch of fine print to this. They’re warning that refunds may take 90 days; Design Hotels and Homes & Villas by Marriott are excluded; and this doesn’t apply to group boookings.
Marriott Data Breached Again: Personal Information From Over 5 Million More Accounts Compromised
After disclosing one of the biggest data breaches in history at the end of 2018, Marriott is sharing another data breach – as if just to show that bad publicity, degraded customer trust, and massive fines alone can’t put Marriott and Bonvoy on the straight and narrow
