Amazon has brought back a great deal: 40% off if you pay with American Express points for your purchase. The trick here is you only need to use 1 point to get 1 cent off your purchase total in order to qualify for the deal.
- If you don’t already have an American Express card with Membership Rewards in your Amazon account, add one. If you don’t already have one you may not be targeted for this offer, but doing this will set you up for next time at least.
- Activate the offer.
- At checkout, select your Amex card as payment and pay with points – but be sure to change the number of points spent to just 1 (rather than enough points for your full purchase) because paying for a purchase with Amazon just is not worth it otherwise.
I’ve just successfully activated this offer myself. Items sold and shipped by Amazon will give you up to $40 off a $100 purchase (or less for 40% off smaller purchases).

My offer is for $10 off a $100+ purchase.
Specific deal seems to vary from customer to customer. Mine was for 20% off, max of $30.
This was my offer:
Shop eligible products
Add one or more of eligible products sold & shipped by Amazon.com to your shopping cart. Promotion can be redeemed on multiple purchases. Total discount available is $30.
Use Membership Rewards points at checkout
Membership Rewards points will be temporarily set as your payment method at checkout. To redeem this offer, you must use Membership Rewards points for at least a portion of your order.
20% savings will be reflected on the final order checkout page if the items in your order are eligible for the promotion
Unenroll if you are not eligible then wait a day or two. Then re-enroll, check offer link.
My offer was 40%/$40 max (Amex Platinum. Since Amazon adds about a 30% premium to “pay with points” vs. the charge card, it’s not such a great deal, BUT it is a deal.
I saved a couple of bucks on a book purchase.
Thanks for the info Gary.
My offer also $10 off $100.
Mine was $10 off $100 or more 🙁
Mine was $10 off $100 or more too.
The Chase point link I got was $10 off a purchase of $30 or more.
$10 off $100 as well.
$10 off $100. Not worth it at that unless I already had something I was going to purchase.
$40 off a UPS I needed to order for my desktop.
Plus the article about AA Advantage 18 month expiration for lifetime elites. Used the contest to win 40 points.
Thanks Gary for these two articles.
As Gary notes “The trick here is you only need to use 1 point to get 1 cent off your purchase total in order to qualify for the deal.”
In the past I have used this to purchase gift cards. With 40% off, I have purchased $100 in gift cards for 1 MR point and $59.99 charged to the card.
It worked for me. Thanks for the heads up. I got 40% off with up to $40 back. You mentioned it but the tricky part was that it must be items sold by Amazon.com and most of the stuff on my wishlist was from other sellers. 🙂
I used only 1 MR as I get more value using for flights over their value at Amazon.
