Arguably Club Carlson has been the most rewarding program for in-hotel spend since they launched in 2011.
That’s even after they devalued points transfers to airline miles (and not for the first time), devalued the program across the board, and eliminated the second night free on award stays benefit for co-brand Visa cardholders.
The problem of course is: do Club Carlson’s hotels, like Radisson and Park Inn, work for you? There are some surprisingly nice Radissons, like the one in Downtown Austin (whose bar is the single best place in town from which to watch millions of bats fly out from underneath the Congress bridge) and of course the Radisson Blu brand is fairly upscale. They’re better in Europe than in the US but not actually luxury.
Still, if you can make Radisson and cousins work for you, they’ve got a really valuable program and they’ve launched a new promotion.
Registration is required, and you can earn up to 100,000 bonus points for stays through March 31, 2017.
You have to pick your bonus, and you cannot change once you’d decided. You’ll need to select one before your first eligible stay in order to maximize the offer.
Here’s the choice
- Stay 1 night, earn 5,000 bonus Gold Points
- Stay 2 nights, earn 10,000 bonus Gold Points
- Stay 4 nights, earn 20,000 bonus Gold Points
- Stay 8 nights, earn 50,000 bonus Gold Points
- Stay 20 or more nights, earn 100,000 bonus Gold Points
The most points per night is 50,000 points after 8 nights. But you’re going to want to register for the bonus you will certainly hit.
Meanwhile here are the secret rules that Club Carlson hotels know.

Points+cash not eligible for bonus. Bummer as I already have two stays booked with points and cash.
Not trustworthy program
Stinkbomb hotels
Sub par properties
I once stayed with them but now won’t stay even if they pay me too
That’s what happens when you screw your members over
Burnt most of my points in Scandinavia and St Petersburg last year using the last gasp of the 2gor 1 on visa. Not impressed with the chain. However, some places in Europe (like Split), they seem to be the best in town.
Your post is great just for the bay watching tip!
So hard to get value from this program if based in the US. and primarily a leisure traveler. Great redemption in Cape Town in 2015 but then had to leave a free night die on the vine last year because there was nowhere to use it. Simply too few decent properties.
I have 5 cards and tons of points. Love the program. Anyway, it was “last night free” though most people, including me, took adantage of the perk.
Yes, hard to find a decent one, but I do stay at the Martinique in NYC every year, and Cape Town and Austin. Well worth it. Just pay the $60 or $75 for each card every year and it’s a no brainer.
I’m still keeping their personal and business credit cards for the annual 40,000 point bonus, but this year I stopped spending $10,000/annum on the cards to get a US free night. Their footprint is simply too limited (Radisson Martinique in NYC is the only US property I really care to use the free night at, and they keep playing games with availability). I have about 400,000 points banked in the program, which I expect to use in London. Then there’s the occasional 9,000 or 15,000 point night at a Country Inn and Suites, which is often a great value.
Club Carlson points redemptions are excellent value in Sydney, London and a few European locations. Otherwise CC is like Best Western – Great redemptions in Italy, but the rest of the world don’t bother…
Be careful to carefully read the T&Cs on this if you’re doing it. Must pre-register before any stays or they don’t count…. and you can’t change the offer you pre-selected if you end up doing more or less stays than anticipated. Would be easy to screwup on this one if one is not very careful.
I have only stayed at one Country Inn & Suites hotel. It was fine. Better than an Econ Lodge PLUS and not as good as a Sheraton by Four Points. I simply don’t like the style and the smell. The heavy pine air freshener, the green carpet, the decor, and the oak were all just too much. However, redemptions in Europe seem to be the way to go.
