News and notes from around the interweb:
- Cyprus Airways reborn. An airline co-owned by Russia’s S7 Group paid €2 million to license the name for a decade. The previous Cyprus Airways, which I flew years ago on Alitalia codeshare in business class Milan – Cyprus – Rome as part of arguably the greatest mistake fare of all time, shut down after the European Commission ruled that illegal government subsidies had to be repaid but they didn’t have the funds to do so.
- Crazy story of inflight theft of a Macbook, keep your eye on your computer at all times.
- Consumer open and read patterns for travel provider emails
- 14 convicted in Air France bosses’ ripped-shirt case
- National Car Rental’s 1-2-Free promotion which I call the best regular promotion in the rental car industry has been extended. Instead of ending January 31 it will run through February 28.
- Is American Airlines starting a new service to take on SpaceX.. with regional jets?? Ooops. (HT: @JustinBachman)
Click.Bait
“Sucker” is actually “Moron”
This post offers exactly what it says it will. It highlights what was perhaps the best mistake fare there ever was. It is clearly not only about that, the title also asks about American and SpaceX and the description of the post that goes out in email and in RSS feeds makes clear it’s a roundup of links.
There may be times to criticize Gary’s titles which is a pretty pathetic sport to focus on. This really does not seem like one of those times. Leaving a comment to debate a title provides far less value than this post that is for sure.
No click bait, but certainly not even close to the greatest mistake fare of all time. I’d nominate instead the 3 rounds of first class Southeast Asia to North America, via Singapore Suites, Swiss Air and BA first class for ~$500. The Suites leg, from SIN to LHR, was 14 hours and retailed for $10,000…
I had three of the YYZ-LCA mistake biz fares. The AZ biz class was miserable… horrible seats, Bad IFE and inedible food. The list my bags both coming and going. After I flew the first one I refunded the other two as it was so rotten–especially given the repositioning costs for me to YYZ. This deal was good on paper but horrible in practice
@George the ex-Yangon fares? RGN-Canada, those were great. But these originated in North America. And they were totally changable one time — dates, routing, stopovers, whatever. You got your own dedicated reservations agent to handle your preferred itinerary. You got unlimited travel intra-Italy with unlimited stopovers. For ~ $33++.
