I received an email from American offering a minimum of 1250 miles with an Avis or Budget rental. The text didn’t say anything about a minimum rental period.
The link took me to a page that only mentioned 500 bonus miles, and where the terms and conditions mentioned a 3 day minimum rental.
500 AAdvantage® bonus miles offer valid on a minimum qualifying rental of 3 or more consecutive days.
It seems the link should have gone here, where they explain the earning as follows:
Not only is there no mention of a minimum number of rental days to earn these miles, the page specifically says “Now, you’ll earn miles based on your rental (not days)”
This applies to both Avis and Budget. The terms say:
Terms and conditions
Any rental that encompasses the use of either a single car for more than one day, or different cars on the same or consecutive days in the same location shall be counted as a single rental, even if the member checks the car in and back out during the same period. Advance reservations must be made and the car must be rented in member’s name to earn mileage. Only one AAdvantage member per car rental will be credited with AAdvantage miles.
They give discount code K817100 for Avis and UO72400 for Budget. The terms do not say you need to use the discount code. Indeed, the Avis page for this offer says you only need to provide your AAdvantage number to earn the miles and separately mentions the discount code.

I had a 1 day rental in mid-Aug and can confirm that I received 1250 miles. Miles posted as two line entries – one for 500 and one for 750
I used to credit one day rentals to Virgin Atlantic for 1000 miles, and racked up a ton of Virgin miles I’ve never redeemed that way. I value American miles much more highly and this is certainly a strong enough bonus to get me to choose Avis for one day rentals, especially since National Car Rental’s “One Two Free” promotion only gives credit towards free rental days on rentals of 2 days or longer.
The offer is listed as valid on rentals beginning by December 31.
In case this helps anyone, you can do a one-way rental from the Budget at 220 East 9th St. in NYC to a lot of off-airport locations in PA, NJ (and possibly other locations) for about $16 ai with this promo. Example would be 9/25 to 9/26 from E 9th. to Willow Grove PA for $16.39 total.
PS–There is a typo with the Budget code above… It’s U072400 not UO72400 (note the zero as opposed to the letter O in the second position).
Update–You can get a Fullsize car for the same rental I mentioned for $11.64 ai. 🙂
37 rentals part 2?
More or less the same thing United is doing with Hertz. Since most of my rentals are one-day anyway, it’s actually more than made up for any shortfall of miles I otherwise would have earned by flying absent UAL’s new revenue-based earnings scheme.
Makes me wonder when it will be culled back as too rich?
