News and notes from around the interweb:
- Singapore Airlines awards are finally bookable using Alaska Airlines miles. And unlike the rest of Singapore’s partnerships, long haul business class award space appears available to Alaska Airlines! (You cannot book this space, for instance, using United miles.) Some awards are pricing higher than the award chart dictates but there are some great one ways with stopovers you can book.
Alaska charges 100,000 miles each way for business class between the U.S. and Southeast Asia, so that’s a pricey award. You’re better off transferring Chase, American Express, Citibank, or Capital One points to Singapore Airlines Krisflyer to make the booking. US-Europe awards aren’t offered by Alaska, so you can’t redeem Mileage Plan miles for Houston – Manchester or New York JFK – Frankfurt on Singapore.
Singapore Airlines Airbus A350 Business Class - Captain of crashed Sukhoi Superjet criminally charged even without the accident investigation being complete or pointing to pilot error. In post-Soviet Russia, Putin crashes you!
- 30% bonus transferring hotel points to United (HT: One Mile at a Time) 60,000 Marriott points converts to 35,750 United miles with this promotion.
Still, I wouldn’t do that, bulk up on Chase points instead since those transfer to United (and other airlines). The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card offers 60,000 points after $4000 spend within 3 months.
- While American and Qantas are getting closer with their approved anti-trust immunized joint venture, and American and Alaska are nearly broken up, Alaska and Qantas are adding codeshares to New Zealand. One of the things American and Qantas had to change in order to get U.S. approval for their deal is the clause that forbade Qantas to partner with other U.S. airlines without American’s permission.
- Structural cracks found in two Southwest Airlines Boeing 737s. Here’s the crazy story of how Southwest came to operate the 737 in the first place and how they could soon no longer be an exclusively 737 airline.

Really?? That’s quite a shameless plug and also not good advice.
