Singapore Airlines Signs Off On New First & Business Class Seats

Singapore Airlines offers an amazing first class suite on board its Airbus A380s. This is the new product which was unveiled in 2017, offering the ability for the divider between seats to be taken down creating true double beds for couples traveling together.

Much of Singapore’s long haul flying is done with Boeing 777s featuring just a single row of first class seats, and the product is more workmanlike, if you can refer to international first class in this way. It’s more spacious than the business class seat, but there are no doors and the seats don’t a bed but must be converted (though the 2013 version of these seats improves the ability for the seats to recline generally).

Three years ago the CEO of Singapore Airlines described what they would do with their new first class on board the upcoming Boeing 777-9 as a “quantum leap” in their design offering. And now, according to Executive Traveller, Singapore has signed off on its new first and business class products for the aircraft which is currently expected to debut in 2024.

“Everything is new,” beams Betty Wong, Singapore Airlines’ Divisional Vice President of Inflight Services and Design, who recently flew to Seattle to meet with Boeing “ and see some real products that we’ve designed (so it’s) finally coming together.”

Wong confirmed to Executive Traveller this week that the design for all of the Boeing 777-9 seats has now been signed off, barring any small finesses before “the next step, to manufacture them.”

While the aircraft will debut at the Dubai Air Show next week, it was supposed to see deliveries this year but that won’t happen now for several years. However, according to Singapore’s Inflight Services and Design Vice President, the 777-9 prives them “the possibility of lifting the next travel experience.”

A year ago this was speculated to be the new first class seat, but for now the airline remains tight-lipped about the particulars of what we’ll see.

It remains to be seen whether we’ll see doors, or a seat which allows passengers traveling together to remove dividers and sleep as a couple in the sky.

  1. Strangely, Singapore removed the A380 from the non-stop LAX – SIN route a few years ago. The current aircraft has NO first class seating. Hopefully, this proposed cabin upgrade will find its way onto this route. I would guess the same could be said about other routes.
