Southwest Companion Pass Now Lets You Change Your Designated Companion Online

I love the Southwest Airlines Companion Pass. You can bring someone with you when you travel for just the cost of taxes as long as there’s a seat for sale. It doesn’t matter whether you’re buying your own ticket with cash or spending points.

And you can change your selected companion up to three times during the companion pass’s validity. Historically you’ve had to call, but Southwest now lets you do this online. That’s a feature which is new to me!

My last companion pass, earned in January 2022, ran through December 2023. I’d buy a ticket for myself, my wife was my companion (so most trips cost just TSA fees for her travel) and then I redeemed Rapid Rewards points for my daughter’s seat. If you live in a big Southwest city as I do (they’re the largest carrier in Austin) and you have the time to take advantage of a companion ticket, it’s one of the very best deals in travel.

  1. This is a nice QoL change. If my travel plans hold I should be able to try CP out next year — thanks again for the heads up on the promotion! I rarely check my southwest promotional emails.

  2. SWA’s companion pass is the best deal in air travel. Before I retired I took my wife as companion and the kids on Rapid Rewards tickets and we basically never paid for air travel for 6 years. I even took my wife and in laws to Las Vegas for just the TSA charges. I certainly hope that SWA never changes this perk. Being retired now there is no way to get to that level but was it fun while it lasted.
