Capital One Landing New York LaGuardia opens next week, and it instantly becomes the best airport dining experience in America. With dazzling design, runway and skyline views, and dishes you’d expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant, this new space makes airport lounges seem second-rate.
Capital One has signed a lease for a new lounge at Charlotte, and at roughly 14,000 square feet it would be the biggest Capital One Lounge yet. The space will sit on the mezzanine of the Concourse A expansion with tarmac views, locally inspired food, a full-service coffee bar, and work areas—though with only a concessions agreement in place, an opening likely isn’t soon.
I got into the Capital One Lounge at DFW quickly, but the experience felt noticeably different: the grab n go area was closed and items were only available “on request,” while the hot food lineup was weaker than what I remember from early visits. The company says a temporary maintenance issue is to blame, but the overall drift—less selection and less polish—has been showing up more than once.
Capital One has launched a new co-brand credit card with T-Mobile, offering 2% back on spending — but the real story may be what comes next. The partnership could signal that Capital One is preparing a broader push into travel cobrands to compete with Chase, Amex, and Citi.
I’m earning valuable points that are increasingly flexible, and getting great perks, so I’m a big fan of what Capital One has been doing for the past roughly seven years in building out these products.
At this point I think that Capital One has the two best credit card lounges in the United States – their JFK lounge, and their ‘Landing’ tapas restaurant at Washington National airport in D.C..
Capital One’s Denver airport lounge could be great, but it’s too small. As a result, the place gets packed and waits to get in can be long. Once inside, the food is good, but too many seats don’t have power outlets. There is a trick to find some privacy amidst the chaos, though.
This new lounge features ordering of hot items, rather than those being relegated to the buffet. There’s a cheese monger, offering 45-minute cheese tastings with paired wines, and a coffee shop that offers ess-a-bagels baked on premises with lox, pastrami, smoked whitefish and more.
The Capital One Venture X Rewards Card announced lounge access changes. I think the extreme nature of the changes are a mistake for the card issuer, but they don’t affect me personally with the card. In fact I will come out ahead.
The card is worth getting, spurred on by the initial bonus offer. It’s worth using for my ongoing spend. And it’s worth having for the benefits.
