American Airlines Can No Longer Squat on China Routes
A roundup of the most important stories of the day. I keep you up to date on the most interesting writings I find on other sites – the latest news and tips.
Passenger Mistakes Exit Door for the Bathroom, Delays Flight 7 Hours
Saturday’s Pakistan International Airlines flight PK702 from Manchester, U.K. to Islamabad was delayed nearly 7 hours when a passenger wanted to go to the bathroom.
A woman seated towards the rear of the Boeing 777 thought the plane’s exit door was the lavatory. She opened the armed rear left door, deploying the emergency slide.
Why Hong Kong’s Rejection of Cathay Pacific Advertising is a Show of Strength for Beijing
Hong Kong’s airport and mass transit refused to display a Cathay Pacific ad which depicts two men walking on the beach holding hands with a slogan ‘move beyond’.
While this highlights continued lack of tolerance for homosexuality in Hong Kong, and backlash as societies undergo transformation, it also signals a broader discomfort in Hong Kong with social movements as Beijing asserts its influence over the increasingly less independent region.
US State Department Issues Travel Advisory for China
The US State Department has updated its travel advisory for China. That’s getting plenty of coverage but let’s keep things in perspective.
The US is advising the same level of caution for Beijing as Paris. I guess tourist scams like Chinese tea ceremonies are about on par as someone ‘finding a ring you must have dropped’ by the Eiffel Tower.
Passports are a Very Old Idea, But Did You Know That Needing Them to Travel Abroad is New?
I had no idea just how recent the requirement of a passport for international travel really is, even though the concept of a passport is a very old one. Did you know that passports weren’t commonly required for travel across Europe in the years leading up to World War I?
A Business Class Trick to Hong Kong to Save $3000, and China Business Class From $1300 Roundtrip
With half a dozen Chinese airlines flying to the U.S. in addition to three U.S. airlines flying to China — and with China’s carriers growing capacity from secondary cities — fares to China are some of the lowest in the world.
Air China’s Shenzen flight is super interesting because the airport is a mere 24 miles from Hong Kong. You can take a taxi or ferry across to Hong Kong (there’s a border crossing involved) and save about $1000 roundtrip and avoid a connecting flight, or save $3000 roundtrip compared to Hong Kong non-stops.
$1300 Roundtrip Business Class Fares to China
With half a dozen Chinese airlines flying to the U.S. in addition to three U.S. airlines flying to China — and with China’s carriers growing capacity from secondary cities — fares to China are some of the lowest in the world. That occasionally includes business class fares. But $1300 roundtrip? That’s insane.
American’s Far Fetched Claims to the DOT About China
American Airlines is dropping both their Chicago – Beijing and Chicago – Shanghai flights and shifting Chicago – Tokyo flying to joint venture partner Japan Airlines. Hawaiian Airlines is giving up on Honolulu – Beijing as well.
American would like to keep their route authority from Chicago to China even while not using it. They’ve made some rather incredible claims to the Department of Transportation in support of that request.
US Airlines are Losing Interest in China, and That’s Bad for China’s Carriers
China is the next big thing. That was true 15 years ago, and may still be true 15 years from now (without ever actually becoming).
American carriers used to operate two-thirds of the flights between the U.S. and China, and now that’s flipped. And to hear Dr. Zhihang Chi, Vice President and General Manager of Air China North America, tell it “the US carriers are losing interest in the China market.”
