Washington State Senator Jeff Wilson unintentionally carried a gun in his carry-on bag through TSA in Portland, only realizing mid-flight when reaching for gum. Upon landing in Hong Kong, he declared the gun to customs, was arrested, released on bail, and had his passport confiscated with a hearing scheduled for October 30th.
I almost felt guilty! I skipped both the general and PreCheck queues, and no doubt many of the people in those lines would have been eligible for the Priority line. They just hadn’t noticed it.
TSA also wasn’t checking eligibility to use that line and there was no one at the entry to the line checking for it either (TSA screeners don’t care how you get to the front of the line, they do not manage the lines). Anyone could have skipped to the front without even appearing to do so.
I’ve shown up at the airport where both TSA and CLEAR lines were long, and the only way to make my flight was to cut the line. In the confusion of all of the passengers that was doable, if a bit aggressive. As long as you don’t get into a fight in the line you’re probably going to be fine. But breaking rules inside of the screening area will never go well.
One man decided just to press through the screening checkpoint… without stopping for screening.

Three TSA agents were arrested a few months ago for stealing money and other belongings from passengers as they went through the checkpoint. Here’s the thing: there’s video footage of airport security checkpoints. So now video is out showing some of the thefts at the Miami E concourse checkpoint.
Here, one screener reaches in and grabs a passenger wallet to take cash from it back on June 29. In total there’s more than 20 minutes of video showing three screeners pilfering from passengers.
The TSA has been working to end the ‘skip showing ID’ process for people identified through CLEAR, citing a security incident last year. They wouldn’t end skipping security lines, just not showing ID which is something you can’t always count on now to begin with.
We finally know what happened.
No matter how young, children still need their own approved Global Entry application in order to use Global Entry machines and lanes when going through U.S. immigration. But they don’t need it for airport security. And the TSA has increased the age from 13 to 18 for when that changes.
The U.K. has set a June 2024 deadline to eliminate the ban on liquids over 100 milliliters at airport security checkpoints, with the widespread use of scanners that also mean travelers will no longer have to remove electronics from their carry on luggage.
Violent passengers on planes should be addressed by prosecuting those passengers for their behavior and imposing punishments according to law, not by layering on administrative travel bans. Any punishment that encumbers an American’s right to travel should be subject to an appropriate level of judicial review and scrutiny.
The hope is that by using these machines to allow passengers to leave liquids and electronics in their carry on bags the time per passenger in the regular (non-PreCheck) line will be reduced. Clearly somebody had to make a ton of money restoring our rights to where they were pre-August 2006, but did it really have to be Analogic considering the invasive nature of the TSA to begin with?
