Major tech companies are moving into financial services because they think their ubiquity gives them the ability to succeed in an adjacent space, because they have strong brands, and because their tech focus allows them to appeal to a younger ‘new affluent’ demographic.
For the tech companies and issuers the biggest play is financial data.
Barclays is re-launching their Uber Credit Card today with a new value proposition. You can apply online or in the app and current Uber cardholders will be transitioned to the new product in the first half of 2020 after being notified by email and their monthly statement.
The new card earns Uber cash rather than cash back, but offers a ton of value across all Uber spend.
Flewber sounds like Uber, and it’s app-based booking of private flights in the Northeast. They serve Boston, New York, East Hampton and Nantucket. And at $700 roundtrip — or $400 one-way — they even include a rebate to Uber to the airport.
They’re expanding to Philadelphia and DC and within 2 years to “Florida, Texas, California, Washington state, and Chicago.”
UberEATS, the service that delivers food from restaurants, already delivers food from restaurants that don’t exist. Now they’re testing a new service that lets you order food through their app and then eat it at the restaurant. So far the concept of using Uber to eat in a restaurant is being tested in Austin, Dallas, Tucson, and San Diego.
